On Tuesday 4th November 2003 Harrison and Hetherington conducted their annual Autumn show and sale of Galloway Cattle. The pre-sale judging was most ably carried out by Mr M Wallace of Farney Shields, Ninebanks and Mr I Bell of The Bloch, Langholm. The male championship was awarded to “Roan Border Shindig” a very stylish young bull consigned by Messrs D Jackson and Son of Blackburn Farm, Newcastleton who completed a unique double having earlier triumphed in the Whitebred Shorthorn classes. The bull later sold for 500gns to Messrs HL Whitfield & Son of Bateyshield Farm, Kellah, Haltwhistle, Northumberland.
The female classes were particularly competitive with both high numbers and exceptional quality throughout. After much deliberation the championship was awarded to “Kingsford Penelope”, a wonderful in calf heifer consigned by first time exhibitor to Borderway Mart Mr G Webster of High Williamshaw, Stewarton, Ayrshire. The heifer met with spirited bidding in the sale ring peaking at a very satisfactory 1,600gns with Mr D Cormack of Abbotts Close, Sutton Road, Thirsk. Messrs Cormack also made the long journey North for Mr F Key’s from Lime Tree Farm, Thurning, Melton Constable, Norfolk a very succesful one by purchasing “Thurning Queen 3rd” a very correct in calf heifer for a respectable 1,300gns. Stablemate to “Kingsford Penelope”, “Kingsford Sapphire” also broke the four figure barrier selling at 1,000gns to regular sale supporters Messrs Porter of West Carrabus, Bridgend, Islay, Argyll. Local breeders also had a great day with the non-pedigree heifers and calves from Mr JR Little of Park Nook, Bewcastle creating a great deal of interest and spirited bidding resulting in a top price of £1,120 with four units breaking the £1,000 mark and a Parknook average of £900. Mr Gordon Kyle of Spoutbank was to the fore in the sale ring also breaking the £1,000 mark for his annual consignment of heifers and calves. Topping the pedigree bulling heifer section was the reserve champion “Claretta 13th Of High Creoch” from Messrs G & K Gilligan of High Creoch, Gatehouse Of Fleet, Castle Douglas which sold for 800gns to Messrs D Jackson & Son of Blackburn Farm, Newcastleton. One of the day’s judges Mr Martin Wallace went to 780gns for a terrific heifer consigned by Messrs Graham and Sons of Thomasdene, Solmain, Walton, Brampton. In the non-pedigree section the top price of £720 was achieved by both Messrs JW Forster & Son, Smithsteads, Bewcastle and Messrs L & H Kennedy of Barron House, Gilsland, Brampton as the large crowd of bidders competed strongly to ensure that this sale became one of the most successful in recent years. Averages: 1 Bull £525.00 (£+26.75); 12 Pedigree Heifers in milk or in calf £943.25 (+£129.25); Non-Pedigree Heifers in milk or in calf £661.25 (+£162.77); Non-Pedigree Cows in milk or in calf £772.86 (£537.86); 25 Pedigree Bulling & Maiden Heifers £603.12 (£133.12); Non-Pedigree Bulling & Maiden Heifers £514.67 (+£186.44). |
