Charolais champion tops the trade at 8,000gns

The day’s champion Charolais bull headed the trade
at 8,000gns at the breed society’s official autumn show and sale
in Carlisle on Friday 26th November 2004, while a strong demand for females
forward in the
annual Christmas Cracker led prices to peak at 7,800gns.
Sale topper was Esgob Union, a 19 month old from Welsh breeder, Gareth
Jones of Cwmtirmynach, Bala who made a 400 mile round trip and a highly
successful comeback to Carlisle after a 10 year absence and took home
the silverware for what amounted to the fourth time. Union, who has been
in the tickets earlier on this season including the reserve championship
at Merioneth, was a Simpsons Gregg son and out o a homebred cow from
the 20 strong Esgob herd. He continued his journey over the water to
the Isle of Man with WE Parsons, of Laxey, where he will be used over
a commercial suckler herd and a small herd of pedigree Charolais.
Gareth Jones continued his success with Esgob Unique CH25 who stood first
in his class and returned to Wales for 3,600gns with RE Griffiths, Criccieth.
This May 2003 born entry was by Moyness Lincoln and out of a homebred
cow sired by Brampton Embark.
Seconds later Bassett Unicorn from Jean Atkinson, of Thorpe Bassett,
Malton attracted the day’s second highest price of 7,000gns from
Iain Millar, Port of Menteith, Stirling. This second prize winner in
his class was a 19 month old by her noted Bassett Pearlyking and out
of homebred cow, both of which go back to Barleyfields Leonard.
Unicorn’s stable mate, Bassett Universal another 19 month old by
Bassett Pearlyking from Jean Atkinson commanded one of the two 4,000gns
bids. He went to north Wales with HC Williams, Cerrig y Drudion, Corwen.
Two Scottish bred entries shared a 5,000gns price tag. First to go was
Bill Bruce’s (Meigle, Perth) Balmyle Uplift CH23, a 19 month old
by the 28,000gns Perth champion, Brampton Nacodar. He sold to Maltas
Farms, Moffat. Lucy Poett, of Dollar, Clackmananshire, offered the second
5,000gns lot, the February 2003 born Harviestoun Ugadale, a Lochend Rasper
son and
out of a cow going back to Blelack Navigator. Ugadale who was a second
class prize winner, was knocked down sold to G and GW Mair, Lockerbie.
Gaer Ultimate, an August 2003 born first class prize winner from TE Jones,
Brooks, Welshpool commanded the second 4,000gns bid. Ultimate was by
Gear Protocol who goes back to Allanfauld Vagabond and out of a Coat
Lezard sired homebred cow. He was secured by P Balderstone, Jedburgh.
At 3,600gns, Midlock Universe, an 18 month old by Baggrave Minstrel from
John Wight and Sons, (Biggar) sold to J Walton, Staindrop, Darlington.

Topping the Christmas Cracker female section at 7,800gns
was the section’s
reserve champion, Mike and Margaret Atkinson’s (Kirkby Malzeard,
Ripon) Mowbraypark Treasure who is in the breed’s top 1% with a
Beef Value of CH40 and accompanied by a wealth of outstanding genetics.
This April 2002 born served heifer was by the Killadeas Jack son, Mowbraypark
Paramount who has produced three sons so far to gross 51,000gns, and
she was out of Mowbraypark Naxos who is full sister to the 25,000gns
Perth champion, Mowbraypark Orlando. Treasure sold to the Blyth family,
Roy, Jean and Neil to join their Marwood herd based at Elwick, Hartlepool.
Commanding the second highest female bid of 6,200gns was the Christmas
Cracker champion, Westcarse Tanya CH33, a rising three year old served
heifer bred by John Christie, Stirling and offered by Alasdair Houston,
Gretna Green. Sired by Lochnagar Imperator, Tanya was a great granddaughter
of the Burke trophy winner, Lakeland Sagesse and out of Westcarse Ovation
who also bred the 2004 Cumberland and Dumfries champion, Gretnahouse
Upward. Tanya was knocked down sold to Sarah Burton, Rempstone, Loughborough.
Mowbraypark lines were also evident in the next lot, Thrunton Tania,
an August 2002 born served heifer from the Campbell family, Colin, Ian
and John, of Thrunton, Alnwick. Sired by Orlando, she was out of a homebred
cow by the 20,000gns Perth champion, Moncur General and her pedigree
contained no less than eight Royal and Perth championships. Tania was
purchased for 5,400gns by breed newcomer, AK Brooke of Glenluce, Newton
Stewart who also went on to invest 3,800gns in Burnside Ultra CH22, a
21 month old maiden heifer by Moorlough Palo from Northern Ireland breeders,
Brian and William McAllister, Kells, Ballymena, County Antrim.
A 4,200gns bid from Cheshire breeder, W Baxter, of Sound, Nantwich secured
Brampton Uniglow CH31, a 22 month old maiden who was first in her class.
Bred by Billy Turner, Ripon, Uniglow was sired by Brampton Ronaldo and
bred from a strong female line with her hombred dam, Brampton Rizzo going
back to the noted Brampton Chopper.
James and Vanessa Webb, of Billesdon, Leicester forked out the day’s
second 3,800gns bid in the Cracker section for Balnuith Upama CH29, a
May 2003 born maiden by the 11,000gns Perth junior champion, Lochend
Pirate and out of a Blelack bred cow from the Caul and Thomson partnership
of Tealing, Dundee.
Averages: 30 bulls £2,744 (plus 156.26 on 2003); Christmas Crackers:
3 served heifers £6,790; 14 maidens £2,370. Maerdy: 42 heifers £1,333.75;
8 other collective females £1,030.30; Bega reduction: 11 head £1,188.41.
