Charolais bulls met a solid trade selling to a top of
5,200gns in Carlisle on March 12th 2004, at the breed society's early
spring show and sale, a forerunner to its main spring fixture on 7
May.
Leading
the bidding at 5,200gns was the day's champion, Stobarts Teddy, a rising
two year old from David and Majorie Stobart, Brampton, Carlisle. A
Chesham Ping Pong son, he was out of Tillbrook Peppermint, one of more
than 50 head purchased by the Stobarts from the Tillbrook herd for
restocking purpose more than two years ago, Teddy was knocked down
sold to JM Fisher, Leswalt, Stranraer.
Welsh breeder, Arwel Owen, of
Foel, Welshpool made a highly successful 400 mile round trip when he
sold Trefaldwyn Tictac for the day's second leading bid of 4,500gns
to Broughton Grange Farms, Drumlanrig Mains, Thornhill. This 18 month
old was by Oscar and out of a homebred cow going back to Haymount Jetstream.
Fred Graham's (Eaglesfield, Cockermouth) Gaer Sergeant changed hands
for 4,000gns to EI Coulthard, Brisco, Carlisle.
Another Welsh bred
bull, by TE Jones, of Welshpool, Sergeant was a Glenleary Janitor son
and out of a homebred cow by Maerdy Iceman.
Forking out 3,200gns for
Haltcliffe Tavy was Northern Ireland producer, Norman Wilson, Temple
Patrick, Country Antrim. Bred by Matt and Craig Ridley, Hesket Newmarket,
Wigton, the 18 month old Tavy was accompanied by familiar NI bloodlines.
He was by the County Down bred Simpsons Gregg and out of Duncan MacGregor's
Corrie Lucy.
Two entries from the Campbell family, Ian, John and their
father, Colin of Thrunton, Alnwick were each bid to 3,000gns a piece.
First to go was Thrunton Torpedo (September 2002), a Maerdy Nero son
and out of a homebred cow by Blanerne Fearless. He travelled to Buckinghamshire
with his buyer, W Austin, Bledlow. TM Thompson, Alnwick shelled out
the second 3,000gns price for the October 2002 born Thrunton Toyota,
a Mortimers Politican son and out of a homebred cow going back to Nero.
The day's third 3,000gns bid was made for Brampton Tennesse, an 18
month old by Oscar and out of a Brampton Tenpin sired cow from the
British Charolais Cattle Society's president, Billy Turner, of Ripon.
He sold to J Hyslop and Sons, Abington, Biggar.
Averages: 31 bulls £2,220.08;
