Charolais females command rock solid trade in Carlisle peaking at 6,500gns Pedigree Charolais cows and heifers met a rock solid demand selling to a top of 6,500gns in Carlisle on Thursday 21 August 2003 when JSR Farms, of Pocklington, York sold a major portion of their Givendale herd. The consignment comprised some of the Charolais breeds highest genetic merit cattle its average beef values were all within the top 10%. " This was a tremendous sale," commented Harrison and Hetheringtons auctioneer, David Thomlinson. "Givendale presented some excellent quality cattle with conformation, flesh and shape. Their high Estimated Breeding Values did count, and they met a buoyant trade which was underpinned by demand from commercial producers as well as several new pedigree breeders at the ringside."
Leading the trade at 6,500gns was Givendale Samba, a January 2001 born heifer in calf to Givendale Operator and with a Beef Value within the breeds top 1% at CH36. Samba was sired by Balthayock Marius who has led the breed’s top 100 young bulls on Beef Value and went on to be national trait leader for Beef Value and muscle depth. She sold to North Yorkshire breeders, Dick Garner and Son, Kirkby Fleetham along with Givendale Sanicle CH38, another 20 month old by Marius and in calf to Operator for 6,000gns. Next to go at 4,600gns was Givendale Peace CH33, a Brampton Chopper daughter with her third calf at foot, a six month old heifer at foot by Killadeas Jack. The pair went to an undisclosed buyer. Another Chopper daughter, this time the six year old Givendale Neep CH28 accompanied by her Marius sired five month old bull calf made 3,300gns to the same undisclosed buyer. Isle of Man breeder, Jim Taggart, of Ballasalla took home a total of nine lots. He forked out the biggest cash of 4,200gns for the Killadeas Jack sired Givendale Panache CH30 sold with her second calf at foot, a March born heifer by Marius. The same buyer also went to 2,200gns for the February 1997 born Bassingbourn Hilton daughter, Givendale Nelly CH28 offered with her May born bull calf by Operator. Two lots shared a 3,100gns price tag. First to come under the hammer sold was Givendale Nip CH37, another six year old Hilton daughter with her April born heifer calf by Marius. The pair went north to AJ Ewing, Annan, Dumfriesshire. Cumbrian breeder, Neil Young, of Waverton, Wigton secured the second pair for 3,100gns. His four year old purchase was Givendale Peach, by Givendale Noddy and accompanied by her second calf, another March born heifer by Marius. A further eight lots sold to 2,000gns or more a piece. Gareth and Meriel Roberts returned to Aberdaron, Pwllheli with Givendale Parasol CH33, by Gandin and whose maternal granddam was Brampton Chopper. Offered withher second calf, a March born bull by Noddy, the pair were knocked down sold for 2,900gns.
Another cow and calf pair heading out to North West Wales this time with EW Thomas, Sarn, Pwllheli was the Bassingbourn Hilton sired Givendale Molly and her Marius sired fifth calf, a four month old heifer. They sold for 2,300gns. York based, Warter Estates Farms paid the same 2,300gns tag for Givendale Pansy CH30, a Marius daughter and her six month heifer calf by Operator. A third and final 2,300gns bid secured the January calved heifer, Givendale Rupee CH27 and her heifer by Maerdy Lusty for WE McIntyre, Largs, Ayrshire. Last through the ring but not least was the herd’s stock bull, the five year old Givendale Operator CH31 whose dam line also went back to Brampton Chopper. He was secured for 6,500gns by GW and L Williams, Croesor, Penrhyndeudraeth, Gwynedd. Averages: |
