Charolais met a solid trade peaking at 8,000gns twice at the breed society's
annual two day autumn show and sale at Borderway, Carlisle.

The event kicked off with a packed ringside at the Christmas Cracker
show and sale on Friday 21 November where bidding was led at 8,000gns
by the champion, Sarkley Tatiana, an outstanding 16 month old maiden
and within the breed's top 1% with a Beef Value of CH39. Bred by the
Pennie family of Montgomery, Powys she was by their homebred bull going
back to Meolfre Mecsico and out of a homebred dam by Oldstone Egbert.
Tatiana went to join W Baxter's Meadowbank herd at Sound, Nantwich.
The Pennies were also in the money on Saturday when their reserve male
champion, Sarkley Trojan CH35 made 5,000gns to V Allgood, Nunwick, Hexham.
An 18 month old Loganbar Herdsman son, he was out of a homebred cow,
a granddaughter of Maerdy Impeccable.
Other leading entries in the Christmas Cracker included Shraden Toyah
CH30 selling for 2,900gns to AP Smith, Aboyne, Aberdeen. Offered by Roger
Everall, Shrawardine, Shrewsbury, Toyah was an 18 month old maiden by
Balthayock Nougat and out of a homebred cow going back to Balthayock
Damien.
The reserve Christmas Cracker title went to Midas Susie CH28, a two year
old sold in calf to Friarton Ensign. A Balthayock Matthew daughter, and
out of a Glebedale bred cow, Susie was offered by another Shropshire
breeder, this time Roger Coppinger, of Wem and she was secured for 2,800gns
by Dick Garner and Sons, Kirkby Fleetham, Northallerton.

Welsh breeders dominated the bull sale on Saturday with the leading 8,000gns
call going to Wyn Rees' (Llangurig, Llanidloes) Hendy Tornado, an 18
month old by Allanfauld Vagabond and out of a homebred cow going back
to Blelack lines. The buyers were JW Dent and Sons, Lartington, Barnard
Castle.
Champion bull, Moelfre Triumph from Kevin Thomas of Newcastle Emlyn secured
the next highest bid of 6,000gns from fellow Welshman, MPB Ashton, Cefn
Coch, Welshpool. A 19 month old, Triumph was by Allanfauld Norseman and
out of a homebred cow.
Next to go at 4,000gns was Whitecliffe Taurus CH22 from Mick and Jean
Hayhurst, Kirkby Misperton, Malton. Sired by the 28,000gns Perth champion,
Brampton Nacodar, this 20 month old was out of the prize winning Balmyle
Oliveoil secured at the Christmas Cracker three years ago. The buyers
were TL Forster and Son, Lowgate, Hexham. Shortly after, the Hayhursts
offered Whitecliffe Tyson CH29, a 19 month old by Dingle Hofmeister and
out of another Balmyle cow. Tyson sold for 3,500gns to J Preece and Sons,
Leigh, Gloucester.
Rounding up the leading Welsh entries was Flintshire vet, Esmor Evans,
Mold with Maerdy Taquin CH23 (May 2002), a Shamleys Hero son secured
by JA Wallace and Sons, Mochrum, Newton Stewart for 3,200gns. Mr Evans
also sold at 2,500gns Maerdy Tabelle, a rising two year old heifer by
Maerdy Ogwen. She returned to Wales with LE and SA Phillips, Llangarrow,
Ross on Wye.
The event included various female drafts led by a consignment from Graeme
Massie who was making a worthwhile 450 mile round trip from Aboyne, Abderdeenshire.
Danny Sawrij, of Boothtown, Halifax forked out 4,000gns for Blelack Illusion,
a brood cow by Tullygarley Goldie and sold with her January born heifer
by Bassingbourn Ralph.
Minutes earlier, the Campbell family, Colin, Ian and John of Alnwick
offered their highest lot, Thrunton Satin for 3,600gns to J and G Sinclair,
Heriot, Midlothian. The two year old Satin was by the Campbell's 25,000gns
Perth champion, Mowbraypark Orlando and she was sold in calf to another
champion, Burradon Talisman secured for 15,000gns in Carlisle earlier
this year.
David Pawson offered a draft from his Blackburn based Yellowhill herd
which was led at 3,000gns by a three year old heifer and calf pair to
breed newcomer, Richard Vaughan, of Malpas, Cheshire. Yellowhill Reflection
was a Brampton Minstrel daughter sold in calf to Barringtons Olympian
and her eight month old heifer was by Allanfauld Vagabond.
Finally, the fixture saw Glenda Tillbrook disperse the remaining members
of her Buckinghamshire based Tillbrook herd. Tillbrook Jade, a Baggrave
Hollywood daughter in calf to Chesham Pingpong led the trade at 3,400gns
to Ann Orr-Ewing, of Purton, Swindon.
