Solid trade for Carlisle Charolais peaking
at 15,000gns
A strong demand for Charolais bulls from a packed ringside
of commercial producers led bidding to peak at 15,000gns at Carlisle on
Friday 9 May, the second day of the breed societys two day spring
show and sale fixture. Bidding was fuelled in particular by those seeking
ready to work bulls, and a total of 105 lots came under the hammer to
level at £2,841.

| Burradon Talisman |
Sale leader at 15,000gns was the days intermediate
and overall supreme champion, the Northumberland bred Burradon Talisman,
a 16 month old from Chris Curry, Thropton, Morpeth. Talisman returned
to the county with the Campbell family, Ian, John and their father, Colin,
of Thrunton, Alnwick. Talisman who was accompanied with a Beef Value within
the breeds top 10% at CH24 achieved the best ever trade for Burradon,
he was the first son to be offered by Blelack Prince and he was out of
a homebred cow by Maerdy Victorious.
The Campbell family recouped virtually the entire cash they shelled out
for Talisman with just three of their own entries. They led the female
section at 4,800gns with Thrunton Petal, a February 1999 born Maerdy Location
daughter sold with her eight month old Mortimers Politician sired heifer
at foot. The pair were secured by the Clints Farming Partnership, Heriot,
Midlothian. Petals stablemate, Thrunton Pervenche CH20 (August 1999)
made 3,800gns to CJ Harker, Port William, Newton Stewart. A Location daughter
she was paired with her September born calf, again by Politician.
The Campbells also offered a string of bulls with the highest 4,500gns
bid being made for the days reserve senior champion, Thrunton Sydney
CH19. He sold to Welsh producers, Messrs Chandler, Crucorney, Abergavenny.
The 19 month old Sydney was another bull by their highly successful 25,000gns
Perth champion, Mowbraypark Orlando and out of a homebred cow, again by
Maerdy Location.
The second highest bid at 12,000gns came late in the day for the junior
male and overall reserve champion, Pedr Tennessee CH26, a 14 month old
from Peter Howells, Lanwenog, Llanybydder, Ceredigion. He completed his
lengthy journey for the week by travelling north to Aberdeenshire with
the Massie family Neil, Graeme and Michael, Dinnet, Aboyne. Tennessee
was by the Harold Stubbs bred Derryharney Outstanding who was secured
in Perth as a first prize winner for 18,000gns, and he was out of the
Royal Welsh junior champion, Trefonnen Imogen.
Next to go at 7,000gns was Mowbraybark Star, a rising two year old who
is full brother to the 25,000gns Mowbraypark Orlando and earlier on carried
off the senior male title. Bred by Mike and Margaret Atkinson, Kirkby
Malzeard, Ripon, Star had a Beef Value within the breeds top 1%
at CH34. Sired by Killadeas Jack and out of their Brampton Chopper sired
Mowbraypark Islay, Star was knocked down sold to BE, G and RW Brazier,
Lenborough, Buckingham. The Atkinsons also offered a small draft of heifers
from Mowbraypark with the rising two year old maiden, Mowbraypark Shimmer
CH28 leading at 3,200gns. A Mowbraypark Napolean daughter she sold to
Howard and Edward Foster, of Bardon Mill, Hexham.
A couple of entries shared a 5,500gns price tag. First through the ring
was the Yorkshire bred Brampton Snowstorm from Billy Turner, Ripon and
he travelled back over the Pennines with Warter Priory Farms, Warter,
York. This 18 month old who headed his class, was by another Yorkshire
bred bull, Bassett Pearlyking and out of a cow going back to Brampton
Ace.
Alasdair Houstons (Gretna Green) Gretnahouse Triumphant CH23 was
the second lot to realise 5,500gns, this time from G Owen, Penybont, Llandrindod
Wells. Bred from Moyness lines, and with an EBV for muscling within the
breeds top 1%, the aptly named Triumphant was the first Gretnahouse
prefixed bull to be offered since restocking the herd post FMD.
At 5,000gns Robert and Caroline Dalrymple, Ballantrae, Ayr took home the
reserve junior champion, Marwood Trojan CH22. Bred by the Blyth family,
Roy, Jean and Neil of Elwick, Hartlepool, he was the first son to be offered
by their 15,000gns reserve Perth champion, Inverlochy Passport who also
the youngest bull ever to claim the Royal Highland junior interbreed beef
award.
Next in the bidding at 4,800gns was Archie MacGregors (Kilsyth,

whose last calf, Caylers Supreme made 6,200gns in Carlisle exactly 12
months ago. The Barkers achieved success with a couple more Prunty sons:

from Edward Jones, Brooks, Welshpool. Gaer Sergeant (October 2001), another
Janitor son from the same breeder made 4,000gns to F Graham, Eaglesfield,
Cockermouth.
Yorkshire breeders, Michael and Andrew Stenton,, Billingley, Barnsley
were in the money with two lots at 4,500gns apiece. First to go was their
Billingley Sven (September 2001), by the Carlisle champion, Derrygiff
Mills and out of Billingley Leilla, another Brampton Ace daughter. Sven
went to RA and BEC Allison, Lesserlinn, Lanark. Their second 4,500gns
entry was Billingley Spruce CH28, an 18 month old son of the Irish bred
Roundhill Ohoh and out of Brampton Gladiator daughter. Spruce was knocked
down sold to Carskiey Estate, Campbeltown, Argyll.
Another class winner, Corrie Tomahawk attracted a 4,400gns bid from PR

by a high rating Beef Value of CH30, from Duncan MacGregor, Kilsyth, Glasgow,
