Spring Show and Sale of Charolais Bulls & Females
FRIDAY 14th MARCH 2003

Report

Charolais meet brisk demand to 7,000gns

Charolais bulls met a brisk demand selling to 7,000gns for the supreme champion and with 36 lots averaging £2,481 at the breed society's official early spring show and sale staged at Carlisle on Friday 14 March 2003, a forerunner to its main spring fixture on 9 May.
"The event proved to be very satisfactory," according to the British Charolais Cattle Society's chief executive, David Benson.
"Trade was fuelled throughout by commercial producers who are becoming even more aware of the Charolais key characteristics and its ability to leave those calves with weight for age and quality conformation which will be essential for a sustainable beef enterprise following CAP Reform."

Caylers Sebastian

Leading the day at 7,000gns was Caylers Sebastian, a 16 month old who was among the most well travelled bulls at the event. He made a 270 mile trip from Royston Hertfordshire to Carlisle with breed society president, Greta Barker, and went home to the Isle of Man with J Taggart, Ballsalla. Sebastian who secured the silverware for both overall supreme and male titles was by Balthayock Marius and out of a homebred cow by Killadeas Lloyd. He was within the breed's top 1% with a Beef Value of CH33.

Mr Taggart also shelled out 3,500gns for Alasdair Houston's (Gretna), Cargriff Supersonic CH23, an 18 month old bred by Griff Morris, Carmarthen and by Alwent Osprey.

Reddings Scotty

The event's second highest lot at 4,200gns was the overall reserve and reserve male winner, Reddings Scotty to Ross Farms, Gorebridge, Midlothian, while his twin, Reddings Stevie made 2,600gns to G and GW Mair, Meikleholm, Lockerbie. Bred by Mrs JS Wilson, Moffat, Dumfriesshire, the pair of 18 month olds were by Balthayock Matthew and out of a homebred cow that goes back to Kersknowe Fortune.

Three lots shared a 4,000gns price tag. The first bid was made early in the day for Westcarse Scooby, a two year old by Baggrave Hollywood and out of a Maerdy Victorious bred cow from John Christie and Son, Stirling. He went to Frank Johnston, Hamsterley, Bishop Auckland.

Corrie Sutton (September 2001) commanded the second 4,000gns bid from P Oag, Wick Caithness. Bred by Duncan MacGregor, Kilsyth, Glasgow, Sutton was by the 12,000gns Midlock Parker, out of a cow bred by Allanfauld Vagabond and consigned by Messrs Ridley, Hesket Newmarket, Wigton.

The Oags who made a 750 mile round trip from north east Scotland, also went to 3,800gns for Midlock Sam, an 18 month old Seawell Oracle son from John Wight, Midlock, Biggar.

The third 4,000gns price was paid by A and J McIlwrick, New Luce, Newton Stewart, for another Mildlock entry from the Wights, this time the 19 month old Allanfauld Nutcase sired Midlock Sid.

The Dalhanna Farming Company, Palnackie, Castle Douglas forked out 3,200gns for Brampton Soloman CH22, a two year old by the homebred Brampton Soloman from Billy Turner, Ripon. The same buyers also went to 2,000gns for Jimmy Wilson's (Peterhead) Ugie Shetland CH24, a July 2001 born Maerdy Oxytone son.

Averages: 36 bulls £2,481.07.
