Carlisle Charolais heifers sell to 1,650gns

Top price lot 23, Foxacre Rosamundi from Ann Orr-Ewing, of Purton, Swindon, Wiltshire, which sold to Neil Young, Crummock Bank, Waverton, Wigton for 1,650gns.

Foxacre Rosamundi, a two year old Charolais heifer secured the top 1,650gns bid at Carlisle on Wednesday 26 June at the breed society’s first unhaltered sale of females. Bred in Wiltshire by Ann Orr-Ewing, of Swindon, Rosamundi was by Foxacre Magnifique and sold in calf to Balmyle Magnate. She went to young Cumbrian Charolais enthusiast, Neil Young to join his newly established herd based at Waverton, Wigton.

Mrs Orr-Ewing sold seven lots in total including a second heifer by Magnifique, this time the rising two year old maiden Foxacre Reverie with a Beef Value within the breed’s top 25% at CH23. Reverie made 1,300gns to AJ Ewing, Annan. Commanding the same 1,300gns price tag was Foxacre Rapsodie CH29, another maiden by Grove Victor and full sister to a former Royal Show male champion and a BLUP 400 day weight trait leader, Foxacre Maximus. Rapsodie went to Aberdeenshire breeder, JR Benzie, of Ellon.

The day’s second highest price of 1,400gns went to Cotehouse Pearl, a three year old by Riddlecombe Enrico and sold with her January born bull calf at foot. Paraded by Derbyshire breeder, ED Marshall, Scropton, the pair went to F Graham, Eaglesfield, Cockermouth.

Moynton Orphelia, a second calver with her month old bull calf at foot made 1,250gns to D Ferguson and Sons, Bewcastle, Carlisle. Bred in Dorset by Peter Old, this Thrunton Ideal daughter with a Beef Value of CH23, was one of a handful of lots offered by G, MA and RW Smith, Samlesbury, Preston. The same buyers went to 1,200gns for Bega Poise, an in calf heifer by Allanfauld Vagabond from JS and CS Wrigley, St Bees.

Averages: 22 cows and heifers served or suckling £1054.77; 10 bulling or maiden heifers £992.25
