Charolais meet firm trade selling to 5,400gns Charolais met a firm trade selling to a top of 5,400gns at the breed society's official autumn show and sale at Carlisle, on Friday, where commercial beef producers were out in force seeking choice lots.
Leading the trade at 5,400gns was the day's champion, Piatroon Sam, a 21 month old from Harold Forster and Sons, Bardon Mill, Hexham, and he returned to Northumberland to Framhill Farm, Long Framlington, Morpeth. Sam who was by the noted Killadeas Jack, is within the breed's top 10% with a Beef Value of CH24 and he came with a highly creditable daily liveweight gain of 1.95kg.
Next to go at 4,800gns was Roger Everall's (Shrewsbury) Shraden Sirivor CH29, who earlier this year claimed the male breed title at Nantwich Show and on Friday was awarded the overall reserve championship. The 19 month old Sirivor was by Balthayock Matthew who goes back to Dingle Hofmeister, and sold to RO Williams and Son, Llanaber, Barmouth. Yorkshire breeders, Mark and Jane Hayhurst, of Kirkby Misperton, Malton were in the money for the first time since establishing their herd three years ago when they sold their 19 month old Whitecliffe Supreme CH22 for 4,000gns to G Sordy and Sons, Whittingham, Alnwick. Supreme who stood first in his class, was by Thrunton Owent and out of a Loganbar Herdsman sired Linkins bred female which the couple secured as one of their foundation animals for 1,100gns in Carlisle in 1999. Earlier in the day the Sordy family paid 3,200gns for Moyness Sylvain CH25, a 21 month old Maerdy Impeccable son from Sandy Innes, Auldearn, Nairn. Sandy Innes also sold at 3,300gns Moyness Shogun, a March 2001 born Glenleary Mecca son and out of a homebred Maerdy Impeccable sired cow. Shogun went to John Anderson who made a highly worthwhile 800 mile round trip to Carlisle from Thurso, Caithness taking home three lots in total. Next to go at 3,500gns was Peter Vasey's (Carlisle) Edenhurst Supreme, another class winner and son of Killadeas Jack. Out of a homebred cow going back to Brampton Tenpin, this 19 month old sold to T Walker and Son, West Linton, Peebles. Two lots commanded a 3,000gns price tag. First in the ring was Thornham Scoobydoo, an April 2001 born Glenleary Janitor son and out of a homebred cow from Tyneside breeder, GS Eggleston, Matfen, Newcastle. Scoobydoo went to Messrs Thomas, Southwick, Dumfries. Bryan and Richard Coates, forked out the second 3,000gns bid for Maerdy Sheriff, an 18 month old by the full French Maerdy Grimaldi from Welsh vet, Esmor Evans, Mold. Sheriff was destined to join the brothers' 120 cow suckler herd at Westhouse, near Carnforth.
Friday's fixture also featured the Christmas Cracker show and sale of Charolais females which was cleaned up by a couple of entries by Coolnaslee Monarch from Barrington M Robinson's Shamleys herd based Tenbury Wells. Judge, John Jeffrey, of Kersknowe, Kelso awarded the supreme championship ticket to the Shamleys Savanna CH31, a 20 month old Royal class winner who made 3,900gns. Standing below Savanna in overall reserve place and selling for the top female price of 4,500gns was her paternal sister, the January 2001 born Shamleys Sabrina CH31. Sabrina had already amassed a number of tickets on the show circuit this season including junior female honours at the Royal Welsh and female title at the Shropshire and West Midlands, in fact, Sabrina came from a line of champions - both her grand and great granddam were Royal winners. Both Savanna and Sabrina were knocked down to Henry and
Emma Vooght, former dairy producers based at Bovey Tracey, Devon who
are currently expanding their pedigree Charolais herd from 10 to 50
breeding cows. The event also included the dispersal of Ayr based John McIlwraith's Dunure herd. Heading the trade at 2,600gns was Bonnykelly Orlando CH21 selling to David Burns, Clapham, Lancaster. The herd's four year old stock bull was a Killadeas Legend son bred by Bob Leggat, Fraserburgh. Averages: |
