STRONG DEMAND FOR QUALITY AT CARLISLE - BELGIAN BLUES TOP 9,000gns
The Border Belgian Blue Club staged their Autumn Show & Sale, with auctioneers Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Borderway Mart, Rosehill, Carlisle, under the auspices of The British Belgian Blue Cattle Society. Purchasers proved to be selective with a strong demand for quality but the market for other bulls proved a little sticky. The show was kindly sponsored by BBG (Class Prize Money), The British Belgian Blue Cattle Society and Border Club (Advertising). The judge for the day was the renowned and long established Belgian Blue Breeder, Graham Brindley, The Lees, Market Drayton, Shropshire. Graham selected as his Supreme Champion, “Clougher Wonderboy ET” from Zara Chestnutt, Bushmills, Co Antrim. Wonderboy, who has a Carcass Yield Index of +13, well above the breed average, was sired by “Affute Du Ry Ossogne” out of the renowned show-winning cow “Reinbeck Opticia.” The successful purchaser, at 9,000 gns were well known commercial breeders, Messrs Page Bros., Lodge Farm, Elkington, Northampton. Next at 4,000gns was the heaviest bull at the sale, the all black “Kelowna Viscount” from Border Club enthusiasts Steve and Claire Pattinson, Kinkry Hill, Roadhead, Carlisle. Viscount, who stood first in his class was out of their homebred cow “Kelowna Tilly” and sired by “Ridge Dean Physical”and goes home with pedigree breeder, Ernie Hemmings, Hay Lane Farm, Nailsworth, Glos.
Regular consignors to Carlisle, Stephen & Gill Potter were next in line with “Brookfield Walton” at 3,600 gns. After a very successful summer show season, Walton who was sired by “Brookfield Thurso” out of “Brookfield Maisie,” goes home with P W Jones, Dolassey, Bleddfa, Knighton, Powys. Following closely behind, at 3,500 gns was Ian Henderson’s class 2, 1st prize winner, “Welton Valuable Asset ET” He was again sired by “Affute Du Ry Ossogne” out of their good “Totem De Chocquennee” daughter “Springhill Spelga.” The successful purchaser was D R Millburn, Wallend Farm, Greenhead, Brampton.
The Champion Female and Reserve Overall Champion, also from Northern Ireland, came from Mel & Diane Lucas, Co Antrim. Their aptly named young black & white heifer “Lukeroyal Wee Beauty ET” left the ring unsold. She was sired by “Serum D’Anloy” out of “Lukeroyal Tiara.” Norbreck Genetics sold their first “Dafydd D’Ochain” son “Norbreck Arnie ET” at 1,700 gns. Arnie, who was only five months old, is out of the “Tamhorn Sumo” daughter “Tamhorn Umbella,” and was sold suckling his recipient dam. The successful purchaser was RA & NJ Wheelwright, Crow Hill Farm, Cragg Vale, Halifax.
