Quality Sells at Carlisle

The Border Belgian Blue Club held their Fifteenth Annual Autumn Show & Sale on Wednesday 29th September 2004 when auctioneers Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Borderway Mart, Rosehill Carlisle had a catalogued entry of 68 head comprising 44 bulls and 24 females. The show and sale was kindly sponsored by BBG and The British Belgian Blue Cattle Society.

The auctioneer David Dickinson commented that the bulls were keenly bid for with 7 bulls of the 23 sold making 5,000gns and over. Stock masters were looking for power with quality, conformation and balance. The sale prices achieved exceeded vendors expectations. There was a good ringside of prospective buyers gathered.

Ridge Dean VAT - 8,500 gns

Leading the way at 8,500gns was an Osborne – Ridge Dean Jessie bull, who boasts an EBV of 28 from the good stable of Michele Wilde, Ridge Farm, Soulbury, Nr. Leighton Buzzard, Beds, who incidentally topped this sale last year with an 8,200gns bid for Ridge Dean Ultrasonic ET. This time it was the turn of Ridge Dean Vat ET, a twenty month old blue and white bull with an impeccable show record; he was Champion Junior Male and Overall Junior Champion RASE, Junior Champion RWAS and Champion Junior Elite Interbreed bull. Vat was placed 2nd in his class, in the pre sale judging and A Parsonon, Warren Farm, Panton, Wragby, Lincoln secured the 8,500gns bid to take him home.

Just behind on 8,200gns, was Wilodge Vantastic ET who was also shown in the very strong class as Vat, he was awarded the 1st prize ticket & Reserve Male Champion. This eighteen month old son of Affute Du Ry Ossogne and out of Wilodge Real Un ET was the 1st and Reserve Male Champion Stafford County, and 2nd and Reserve Junior Male Champion RASE. Ridge Dean Niagra (maternal grand dam) is maternal sister to Canvin Imrie, dam of Wilodge Meatmaster, who sold Carlisle October 1996 for 10,500gns. Vantastic was bred and exhibited by DA Williams, Lodge Hill Farm, Shifnal, Shropshire and caught the eye of I & CL Richardson, Greenlands Farm, Cockermouth.

The Tamhorn herd of Mrs Jane Wyllie, Pessall Farm, Edingale, Nr. Tamworth, Staffs enjoyed a bumper days trading starting with 7,000gns for her senior bull, Tamhorn Ulysses a two year old son of their homebred Tamhorn Sumo (SR) ET, and out of Fantaisie 2468 De Miecret. He stood 1st in his class and was purchased by Mrs M Conneally, Runway Farm, Meer End, Nr. Kenilworth, Coventry. Next at 6,000gns was her 3rd prize bull Tamhorn Vodka ET by Vigor Du Grand Courty and out of Noella Van De Wolvendree. Vodka a black and white bull is half brother to Tamhorn Tomahawk who also sold for 6,000gns Carlisle May 2003. Messrs Taylor, Water Houses, Gt. Asby, Appleby takes the bull home. JG & M Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton paid 3,100gns for her eighteen month old Tamhorn Valiant ET, a full brother to aforementioned Tamhorn Tomahawk.

Sharplaw Farms, Sharplaw, Hownam, Kelso secured the 5,500gns bid to take home Lukeroyal Vicar ET from the N Ireland home of Mel & Diane Lucas, Sevenmile Straight, Antrim. Their stylish dark blue and white bull by Serum D’Anloy and out of Lukeroyal Princess ET has enjoyed much success at local shows during the summer.

Also hitting the 5,500gns bracket was Hillside Viagra, the youngest bull in the sale at just fourteen months, he is by Croft Ricardo and out of Park Nice One. Viagra was placed 2nd in his class and was bred and exhibited by local enthusiasts Messrs Stoddart, Hill Side, Wigton and knocked down to GH Williams & Son, Penrhos Mawr, Machynlleth, Powys. At 5,000gns from the same good home was Hillside Vince a sixteen month old son of Park Shadow and out of Park Ox Eye. Vince travels north to Aberdeenshire for A Watson & Son, Mains of Fraidland, Banff.

The judge Mr Tom Robinson, Catlow Farm, Slaidburn, Clitheroe found his Female & Overall Champion in the senior unserved heifer class, Clannangael Uma, a blue and white heifer by Totem de Chocquenee and out of Carnaveagh Pat. Uma was bred in Ireland and shown by Tom Galligan, Wood End, Barrack Hill, Romiley, Stockport and sold for the joint top female price of 4,000gns to the judge Tom Robinson.

The Reserve Female Champion was also bid to 4,000gns for BK Ryder, Newton Farm, Annanwater, Moffat. Their Belgium bred heifer Usha Van De Wolvendreef by Cubitus De Pre Rosine sold in calf to their stock bull Greystone The Boss to G & R Bellis, Pantgeiri Fawr, Llandysul, Ceredigion.

The judge awarded the Best Opposite Sex to The Champion ‘Wilodge Perpetual Shield’, Male & Reserve Supreme Championship to Gavin Shanks, Bowmanhurst Farm, By Carluke with his single entry, an imported bull Darwin 9908 Du Coin by Wallon 2015 Du Coin and out of Sonnette Du Coin. Signing the cheque for 3,500gns was DH Lawson & Son, Brookside Farm, Leyburn, N Yorkshire.
