Alpacas sell to 5,500gns twice at auction

A first auction of alpacas conducted by Harrison & Hetherington in the south of England reached two top prices of 5,500gns, with 20 animals topping 1,000gns.

The sale conducted by Harrison & Hetherington consultant auctioneer David Thomlinson for Alpacas of Wessex on April 26 was combined with an open day at Clouds Park, East Knoyle, Wiltshire.

cloud park alpacasThe alpacas presented for the sale were all 1998-born female Huacaya alpacas which had been specially selected by Geoff Scott, of ABQ Alpacas, of Chile and had all been screened by the British Alpaca Society.

The stud farm Alpacas of Wessex was started in 1999 by experienced alpaca breeders John Gaye and Michael Brooke, who have travelled widely sourcing animals both for their own herd and on behalf of clients, and they also work with ABQ Alpacas offering access to South American stock.

The first lot through the ring to make the joint top price of 5,500gns was Rachael the white Huacaya female which has produced one male and one female cria (calf), both white.

Fibre results from her fifth fleece had a micron count of 23.8 and she sold to R Randall on behalf of a client.

Also at 5,500gns was another female from the dispersal of the Loram herd selling to Smallridge Bros, East Collabear, Tawstock, Barnstaple, Devon.

Smallridge Bros also bought three other lots, Celeste a black Huacaya female (micron 23.6) with her second cria, a blackfemale black for 2,000gns; another black Huacaya female M 28.6) called Nancy which has produced one cria for 1,500gns; and a fawn Huacaya female Myriam (M 25.9) with a dark fawn male cria, also for 1,500gns.

The second highest price was 4,000gns paid by Cinear Ltd, Shute Farm, Donhead St Mary, Shaftsbury, Dorset for the grey Huacaya female Perla which has produced a grey male and a black female cria. Four other lots topped 3,000gns and more.
