NORTH COUNTRY CHEVIOT RAM MAKES £4,400 AT LOCKERBIE

At Lockerbie on Wednesday 22nd September 2004 Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held the Principal Sale in the South of Scotland of North Country Cheviot Rams, North Country Cheviot Draft Ewes, Gimmers and Ewe Lambs and Hill Cheviot Draft Ewes, when 3642 Breeding Ewes, Gimmers and Ewe Lambs and 219 North North Country Cheviot Rams were sold.

North Country Cheviot Rams met the best trade seen at any market so far with no fewer than 28 fetching over £1000 and averages well up for more sheep sold.

At the pre sale show the judges Mr A Mackay, Balkeith and Mr J Cromarty, Roadside did a terrific job and awarded the championship to Messrs R & J Dun, Gilston, Heriot which later sold to the judge Mr Mackay, Balkeith.

The Reserve Champion went to Mr G Milne, Kinaldy, St Andrews which sold at £3000. The third prize in a very strong line up went to top local breeders Messrs J.H. Strawhorn & Sons, Broomhillbank which later sold at £800. Undoubtedly the highlight of the day was smashing the centre record was sheep no 78 an ARR/ARR Ram by Allanshaws Admiral which was consigned by Messrs J Runciman, Allanshaws, Galashiels which sold at £4400 to Messrs A & J Jones, Felin Hen, Wales.

Other leading prices included £3000 Kinaldy, Gospelhall and Allanshaws £2800 Gospel Hall & Fallodon Mill and Ericstane £2700 North Synton £2,200 Hownam Grange £2000 Carruthers, Gospel Hall, Allanshaws £1,800 Fallodon Mill £1,700 Pygreave.

In the North Country Cheviot Hill Ram section a very constant trade was achieved with 5 selling at more than £1,000. Topping the sale at £1,600 were Messrs CJ & JM Symons, Attonburn, Yetholm which sold to the Macauley Institute, Sourhope. Also at the same price Sorbietrees Farms Ltd with Drew Oliver bringing a fine pen of sheep which caught the eye of Mesrs RH & CL Dixon, Mowhaugh. Another from Attonburn sold at £1100 this time to Cairns & Logan, South Riccalton. Another from Attonburn sold for £1,000 to Mr P McCormack, Boreland, Kirkcowan.

Messrs JM Elliot & Partners, Hethpool had a great day with their sale at £1,050 to Messrs Elliot from Kirknewton. The sale of Rams reinforced the ever increasing demand for quality with all the best rams very keenly bid for throughout.

Cheviot Females
In the female section centre records fell once again in several categories. The Hill Cheviot Draft Ewes were once again topped by an outstanding pen from Messrs RH Paton, Castle Crawford which sold at £65 to Mr A Fiskin, High Craigton, Milngavie. Hill Cheviot Gimmers sold to £95 for a select pen from Mr J T Douglas, Hownam Grange Cottage with Ewe Lambs peaking at £52 again from Hownman Grange Cottage.

In the North Country Cheviot section quality lots were very easily sold with Draft Ewes selling to £51 for the top pen from quality local consignors Messrs G & W Halliday, Crawthat, Tundergarth. Gimmers sold to £115 from Mrs D Walton, Fallodon Mill, Northumberland with Messrs JH Strawhorn& Son, Broomhillbank selling a large consignment all in excess of £102 to a top of £112.

Other leading prices in the Gimmer section included Messrs WJ Armour & Son, The Milton, Moffat with his pen at £100.

In the Ewe Lamb section a new centre record of £270 went to a select pen from Messrs W & J Thomson, Hownam Grange which went to Mr Jones from Anglesey, North Wales. Another pen from the same home sold for £100.
