STORE & BREEDING SHEEP / Kirkby Stephen sale report

KIRKBY STEPHEN NORTH OF ENGLAND MULE EWE LAMBS
Friday 12th September 2003

On Friday 12th September 2003, Harrison & Hetherington, Kirkby Stephen, presented an entry of 8155 NEMSA Mule ewe lambs and 155 Shearlings at the annual show and sale.

A total clearance was effected to a huge attendance of purchasers from all parts of the country. Gimmer lambs sold to a top of £210 for the champion pen from Messrs Lord, West Dowgill and averaged £74.85 an increase of £11.50 from 2002. Shearlings also increased value by £20.55 a head to level at £95.62.

The show for pens of 10 attracted 22 entries which gave the judges, Mr M Watson, Mr A Redpath and Mrs J Sedgewick a difficult task, they eventually made the following awards which were sponsored by Youngs Animal Health, Carrs Billington Agriculture, Askrigg, Pyes Feeds and Barclays Bank Plc.

Class 1. 10 lambs open to all vendors.
1st, winning the Mart Trophy, Charles Jackson Trophy and NEMSA rosette, Messrs Lord, West Dowgill £210 to J Sedgewick.
2nd WC Porter & Son, Riddings £135 to J Imsley.
3rd GP Taylor & Son, Swathburn, £142 to G Mitchell.

Class 2 10 lambs restricted to members of Kirkby Stephen NEMSA branch, not to be shown in Class1 and for vendors who enter and present no more than 200 lambs.
1st Winning the William Dent Memorial Perpetual Trophy, A & R Bobeck, Windy Hill Farm, £102 to Mr Burke
2nd WM Heron & Son, High Green £142 to Mr Allen.
3rd RC Wharton & Son, Highfield, £100 to Mr Knellor
