On Friday, 21st May 2004, Harrison & Hetherington held their monthly
sale of beef breeding cattle.
The sale has a fantastic reputation for
its
excellent quality. Buyers traveled from as far a field as Orkney in the
North to Cornwall in the South. The ringside was packed from 9.30 in
the morning until 6.45 at night when the hammer fell for the final time
as a catalogued entry of 1,182 cows/heifers and calves had passed through
the ring.

The top price in the cow and calf ring being £2800 for
a wonderful second calved Limousin cow with a Belgian show calf at foot
consigned by JC & SE Little, The Guards, Ireby. The show of heifers
and calves was remarkable as unit after unit passed through the ringside
with prices regularly breaking £1300, the top price being £1700
one of a superb consignment of 25 units from noted stock people Messrs
JS & JO Dodd, West View.
This consignment along with several others
averaged well over £1300. The overall average of heifers and calves
exceeded £1000 which is truly remarkable considering the large
number forward. The combination of a huge crowd and excellent trade meant
that the atmosphere at Borderway was buzzing, throughout the day none
more so than when the bulling heifer ring commenced, prices were wonderful
topping at £860 consigned by Mr A Barker, Townhead, Ousby. Prices
regularly exceeded £800 averaging a staggering £671.
