Quality shines through at Winter National Show in Carlisle

“Tremendous quality throughout the classes”, was how judge Angus Baillie of The Moss herd, Merseyside, described the cattle in front of him at the Winter National Show, held at Borderway Mart in conjunction with this year’s Borderway Agri-Expo event.

Taking the majority of the day’s prizes was the Water End Miss Betsy L090 from Victor and Paula Dobson, Holme-on-Spalding Moor, York. This January 2011-born heifer calf is by the herd’s stock bull Blelack Evergreat H003, who was purchased in February 2010 for 7000gns, and is out of The Moss Mr Essen D413 daughter Water End Miss Belle H070.

This was a huge achievement for Victor and Paula who were helped in the show ring by fellow breeder Stuart Addison, as they took the heifer calf, overall calf and female championship. Miss Betsy L090 is likely to make an appearance on next year’s show circuit. Describing the heifer judge Mr Baillie said: “She is an exceptional heifer with great locomotion, breed character, length and natural fleshing.”

Reserve in the heifer calf championship went to Marsden Farms, Penistone, Sheffield, with Rawburn Kinannie L326, an April-born daughter of Rawburn Elmer J921 out of the ET-bred Rawburn Kinannie J993. Kinannie was recently purchased privately from Messrs John Elliot and Son, Roxburgh Mains, for £10,000 and is a new line of genetics for Ben Marsden who is establishing his Liley herd.

Winning the bull calf and reserve overall calf championship was Bryan Ronan, Appleby, Cumbria, with the February 2011-born Jerusalem Lord Haydn L189. Homebred on both sides this one is by Jerusalem Dartagnan H138 and is out of the Viking Bandy Magic 107H daughter Jerusalem Lady Heather B522. Mr Baillie added: “Yet another cracking example of an Angus calf, he is a good, clean calf with great locomotion.”

Winning the championship in the yearling section, as well as reserve female champion was Whittaker Farms, with Fraser Cormack at the halter of the April 2010-born Flodden Elegant K527. A first prize winner from this year’s Royal Highland Show, Elegant is by Wedderlie New Era H573 and is out of Wedderlie Elegant.
