Saturday 18th September 2010

The 18th annual show and sale of Rare, Minority and Traditional breeds of cattle and sheep, poultry and waterfowl at Borderway Mart, Carlisle was the most successful ever.

Boosted by a very strong commercial breeding sheep trade nationally these primitive and minority breeds met ferocious demand from pedigree enthusiasts and commercial breeders alike.

There were two Manx Loaghtan at £150 and £200; six Black Welsh Mountain over £80; Hebrideans to £95, many North Ronaldsays over £50 a piece and so on.

The same brisk trade was seen in the Jacob ring with prices ranging for decent quality sheep £150 - £300 to a top of £380.

The cattle ring saw a good quality collection of principally Dexters which sold to £1300 along with an entry of Highland and Longhorn females with prices matching current commercial trends with the better quality attracting pedigree premium prices.

Poultry

As ever the huge entry (just over 1000 cages) of poultry and waterfowl attracted an enormous crowd of buyers. The top quality trios of all breeds were making £100 or more with Wyandottes at £310 and seven lots of Call Ducks between £130 and £200 and Rhode Islands at £150.

Geese were selling to £180 for a handsome pair of Red Breasted and Bareheaded and Hawaicens over £100 a pair.

The whole event was a great success and due reward for the many enthusiasts devoted to preserving the merits of the traditional bloodlines of many species and breeds.
