2009 sale report

Thursday 12th & Friday 13th August 2010

Derbyshire breeder, David Thornley of the Dooley flock from Swadlincote took the top price of the two day show and sale for the Beltex society premier show and sale. Selling for 18,000gns was his home bred shearling ram, Dooley Napal, a February born son of the imported sire Viagrow and is out of a home bred mother by Clovis. Napal was bought in a three way split purchase by Neale and Janet McQuiston of the Airyolland flock, Newton Stewart, Kevin and Rachel Buckle of the Buckles flock, Kirkby Stephen and Sue Wilkinson of the Langlands flock, Richmond.

The next price to reach five figures was a shearling ram shown by Neale and Janet McQuiston of Newton Stewart. Airyolland Nailer, sired Airyolland Kingsize and out of a home bred dam, sold for 10,000gns. Nailer has already had success in the 2010 show season when he won Reserve Male Champion at the Royal Highland Show. He also was purchased in a three way split and goes to Anne Story of the Borderesk flock, Longtown, Thomas and James Whiteford of the Tercrosset flock, Brampton and John Metcalfe of the Edenfauld flock, Carlisle.

This was another successful day for Jock McMillan of the Clary flock based at Newton Stewart. His first shearling to enter the ring sold for 7,700gns and is aptly named Clary Number One. A son of Clary Muscle Man and goes back to the noted Cookstown Hamish on his mother pedigree, he was knocked down to join the Broughton flock for A & M Dunlop of Biggar.

Also from the Clary pen of shearling rams came the next leading price of 6,800gns. Clary Nithsdale, sired by Clary Kaiser Chief and also carrying the Hamish line through his mother, was sold to Brian Hall for his Ainstable flock based near Carlisle.

Leading the lamb ram section from the the first days selling was the 1st prize lamb ram shown by Wigtownshire breeder Jock McMillan of the Clary flock. Selling for 5,500gns was his February born lamb, Clary Prankster, sired by Borderesk Leap Frog and out of a Cookstown Hamish bred mother. He was sold a three way split to Andrew Baillie of the Callacrag flock, Lanark, RT Wood of the Kindledores flock, Biggar and T Taylor of the Heathery Hall flock also of Biggar.

The next leading price tag of the lambs was Clary Platform, also from Jock McMillan, who clinched the price of 4,500gns. A son of Eskdale Lionheart and bred from a Headlind Ee By Gum sired dam, this February born lamb sold to Elizabeth McAllister for her Artnagullion flock based at Ballymena, N.Ireland.

Leading the female entries of the sale was the female and reserve overall champion, a gimmer shown by Jock McMillan. Clary Nutshell, a Kaiser Chief daughter and Cookstown Hamish grand daughter, won 2nd prize at the 2010 Royal Highland Show held earlier in the year. She was knocked down for 4,000gns to Messrs Young of Alford, Aberdeenshire.

The next leading female price tag also came from the Clary pen. Selling for 3,600gns was another Kaiser Chief daughter, Clary Naughty. She was sold to Andy Ryder of Moffat, Dumfriesshire.

Averages – 238 shearling gimmers £606.88, 10 aged rams £987.00, 495 shearling rams £799.43, 111 lamb rams £894.30.
