HIGHOAKS DISPERSAL SALE - PART ONE

Wednesday 10th November 2010

It was standing room only for Edward and Linda’s Highoaks Pedigree Holstein Dispersal (Part One) at Borderway Mart, on Wednesday 10th November 2010.

The Auctioneers had expected a huge crowd for this highly respected, well bred herd, not only because of the quality of the stock, but also for the high esteem in which the Wilson family has been held for many generations.

The “Highoaks” herd has excelled in the Border and Lakeland herd competitions and since rebuilding after FMD has not only won the coveted large herds category but has been on the podium every single year.

The sign of a successful sale is invaluably a good average without “jazzy” headline grabbing top prices. This was the case on Wednesday. An average of over £2200, no animals unsold of course, and a top of 5300gns says it all.

Mayne Prelude Arabella

The leading bid from R McNeil, Cairnpat, Lochans, Stranraer was for an Excellent 92-2E third lactation Prelude daughter from the “Arabella” family. Calved in mid-June she had been recently AI’d to the high type Goldwyn x Durham bull R-E-W Seaver.

The fantastic quality of the herd was due in no small part to Edward Wilson’s astute choice of High Type sires – Goldwyn, Shottle, Bambam, Talent, Jasper, Outside and the likes.

Highoaks Goldwyn Riatta

It was a Braedale Goldwyn fresh second calver that has Holstein enthusiasts excited. “Highoaks Goldwyn Riatta” VG86 was backed by thirteen successive unbroken Excellent dams from the same family that produced the Rhapsody’s; she made 4500gns and her 8 week heifer calf by Sicy Knowledge an impressive 2800gns.

Also over 4000gns was probably the first ever milking daughter to be sold in the UK off the hot Canadian sire Comestar Lauthority. At 4400gns she stays in Cumbria joining the Dent’s Bridge End herd at Kirby Thore. Her six week old heifer calf also made 2800gns.

Apart from the top Semex sires represented, daughter of the previous stock sire “Weeton Corporal EX93 (Goldwyn x Celicia) were striking in their fantastic udders. Just one of many was the 4000gns Highoaks Corporal Betty 37, a fresh heifer from a VG Mr Sam cow.

Highest priced calf was from a Bolton from Highoaks Talent Ruby EX91, Talent Ruby sold for 3700gns to the Warnelview Herd, and her stylish heifer calf sold to Andrew Waddell of Dewshill Farm, Lanarkshire.

The quality of the 51 heifer calves (all born since the 1st June) was reflected in the demand for them. They averaged just over £800.
