Pedigree Dairy Day
Wednesday 18th August 2010

200 head of dairy animals of all breeds and ages went under the hammers at Borderway Mart on Wednesday 18th August. Following the commercial sale of mostly Friesian and Holstein fresh calved cows and heifers, which sold well was the monthly Pedigree Show & Sale for the Border & Lakeland Club.

Although the overall quality was not quite up to last month, the demand was noticeably less.

A few of the best heifers made over 2000gns but buyers were able to get very respectable, 30 to 35kg animals with decent pedigrees for between 1500 and 1800gns, they looked very good value.

The top two selling black and white came from the highly respected “Hebrides” herd of Kenny & Betty Robison of the Isle of Gigha. Their milking portion was dispersed last summer and they are now selling the heifers as they calve.

B&L Reserve Champion – Hebrides Bradley Carmen from Kenny & Betty Robison, with Sponsors Ian Plews from Cogent and Dave Harding from Paragon, with judge Philip Stevenson.

Top price of the day was the Reserve Champion, Hebrides Bradley Carmen by Rockalli Bradley and off a Lyster dam she sold for 2200gns to C & L Mair, Townhead Farm Dumfries. Colin had bought “Hebrides” cows at the dispersal and was impressed with their type and production.

The second highest price of 2050gns for a Weaverline Bench Eddie heifer from a high butterfat and protein Raven cow also from Hebrides and also going to C&L Mair.

Closeby at 2000gns was one of three super fresh heifers from N McGarragher’s “Aghavilly” herd near Lochmaben. By Southland Marker off a 50 Tonne Ked Juror cow backed by four generations of very long lasting, high butterfat and protein dams.

B&L Champion – Dalesend Tessa 4 consigned by Dalesend Farms Ltd and shown by Stuart Clapham, with Sponsors Ian Plews from Cogent and Dave Harding from Paragon, with judge Philip Stevenson.
Dalesend Tessa 4

Philip Stevenson ably judged the show and selected his Champion in Dalesend Tessa 4 freshened on the 9th July she was sired by Braedale Freeman and out of Caversfield Tessa 32 EX90. This stylish heifer was consigned by Dalesend Farms Ltd and sold for 1800gns to N&SJ Sanderson, Burtholme, Lanercost.

In the pedigree Ayrshire and Red & White section the trade was similar with the fresh and in-calf heifers looking excellent value for money, disappointing for some vendors however.

Top price at 1800gns was the Reserve Champion from the show, judged by Philip Stevenson; a fresh heifer from Messrs Stevenson’s herd near Kirminnoch. By the home bred sire Stevenson’s Saltire from the Elizabeth family she was bought by Newhouse Farms Ltd, Dumfries.

R&W Champion – Swaites Bracken 10 from J Adamson & Son with Dave Harding and Judge Phillip Stevenson

It was the same story in the Jersey Sale, namely good fresh and served heifers being bought for reasonable prices. The leading bid being 1350gns for a daughter of the homebred sire Hillside Sapphires Jewel from Rapid Bay Ressurection VG87 dam. At 1300gns was another fresh heifer from The Thomson family’s noted Farlam herd.

Two superbly bred served heifers from Craig Brough’s Caldewvalley sold for 1250 and 1200gns. One of which was selected as Champion by Jersey Judge Mark Wilson, this was Caldewvalley Lexington Magic she is due in February to Len-Crest on Time, she sold for 1200gns to EH Fearon, Walton Hall, Grange Over Sands.
