Variety was the keyword at Borderway on Wednesday 21st April for their monthly pedigree dairy show and sale. Variety of breeds, quality and age with fresh cows to maiden heifers of all sorts on offer.
In the Black & White section the quality of newly calved cattle mixed with the very best, well bred heifers selling to very keen competition up to 2800gns with others at 2500 and 2400gns.

The top bid came from Alistair Laird and family of “Blythbridge” who, apart from being judge picked a lovely Comestar Lee heifer from “Holmland” bred from two Excellent Ketby Countess cows. She was Reserve to the overall Champion Stowbeck Kendall Clara from the Wilson’s highly regarder herd. By Alfrag Juror Kendall off a very high butterfat and protein Comestar Outside she was 2500gns and also joins the Blythbridge herd.

Also much admired was a Gillette Final Cut daughter from the Bell’s Holmland herd and bred from the great “Rolls” family developed at Bilsrowan. At 2400gns she now goes to Andrew Bargh’s “Woodclose” herd to milk alongside a lot of super top pedigree cows.

Another batch of 14 nicely bred, very well presented yearlings from the Newheaton herd of Messrs Douglas, mostly ranging from 850gns to 1000gns those looked to be excellent value for the purchasers being by popular bulls Shottle, Kendall, James from long lasting high component stock cows.

In the Ayrshire and Jersey section the smartest fresh heifers between 1750gns and 2100gns. This top price was paid by Messrs James of Melberry Mill, Penrith for a modern, milky and stylish daughter of KC Roses Chatter T Red from the Cuthill Towers Matilda family. She was just one of several admired heifers from this noted herd of A&S Lawrie.

In the Jersey department, as is customary Robert Hunter and family from West Tarbrax, Shotts put forward several very productive superbly bred animals which peaked at 1600gns for a homebred January calved heifer by Clydevalley Whistler from the Fieldfare family. She was knocked down to J&I Watson & Son of Moorhouse Farm, Wigton.
