Blossom is the Spring Champion
The third sale of 2010 for the Border & Lakeland Holstein Club took place at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Wednesday 17th March. The late spring and the need to for milk companies to start paying a fair price for milk reflected in the prices which were down on the month.

The Show and sale was sponsored by Paragon Vets with the show being judged by James Tomlinson from Bilsrow Holsteins. His Champion was Bowberhill Allen Blossom consigned by W.M. Hutchinson she was freshly calved giving 34kgs. This stylish young heifer was sired by Bowberhill Logrey Allen, she went back to a nice line of cows from the well known Comely herd. She sold for 1,750gns and now joins the herd of JS Benson, Gill House, Wigton.

Reserve Champion was the second place heifer in milk consigned by M.W & J.H. Gaitskell from the Boustead herd. She sold for 1,550gns and joins the herd of M Reid & Sons, Fulton, Lockerbie.
Top price went to Stowbeck Igniter Breeze from Skirwith Hall Farms LTD selling for 2,020gns to This fancy uddered young heifer was sired by Summershade Igniter bred from five generations of cows classified in the top two grades. She was also purchased by M Reid & Sons, Fulton, Lockerbie.
Also selling was a classy consignment of thirty Montbeliardes from Lordswood Farm, Frome Somerset. They were all freshly calved heifers displaying fantastic dairy qualities, with super attached udders, oceans of high quality milk and all from animals that had the ability to produce wonderful beef carcases.
Top price was sired by one of Lordswood special homebred sires from a dam with over 8,000kgs and protein to 3.53%. She sold for 1,600gns and joins the herd of RC Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths,Carlisle. Although the average was down from the November sale demand for these dual purpose breed continues to grow, with another consignment planned for later in the year.

WINNOCH WARDEN HITS TOP SPOT
The seventh spring bull sale in association with the Border & Lakeland Holstein Club was held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Wednesday 17th 2010. Demand for bulls of all ages was strong; bulls were dispersed across the UK and Ireland with an 80% clearance and an average of £1930. Buyers were in the market for sires with strong powerful frames and were willing to pay a premium for pedigrees that consistently produced higher percentages of butterfat and protein.

The event was kindly sponsored by Coomara Vets, the show was judged by well know Lancashire breeder James Tomlinson from the Bilsrow herd. Champion bull went to the Annandale herd of Matthew Armour, The Milton, Moffat with the first place senior bull Annandale Ashton, a Ked Juror son from 6 generations of VG and EX dams from the Ada family. This stylish bull sold for 1700gns and now joins the herd of D&I Dyer, Crawley Farm, Yarcombe, Devon. Reserve champion was the first price intermediate bull consigned by Kevin & Christine Wilson Wood Farm, Carlisle this powerful young sire was sired by Erbacres Damion from an impressive cow family with 5 generations of cows classified in the top two grades. He was purchased by KD Askwith, High Woody Field, Co Durham and sold for 3,800gns the second highest price of the day.

First bull in the catalogue was Winnoch Warden, an impressive bull with a long dairy frame, super feet and legs and a pedigree that combined everything that is great about the Holstein and British Friesian breeds. He was sired by Stardale Roberto from a Dripps Rio dam that had an impressive third lactation of 9532kg 3.95% 3.47%. He placed second to the overall Champion in the judging and went on to sell for a top price of 4,000gns to an undisclosed Northern Irish buyer.
