The first instalment of the Holywood Holstein Dispersal
of 250 recently calved and close to calving cows and heifers was held
in Borderway Mart, on Wednesday 3rd March 2010.
As one would expect for such a well regarded herd there was a packed
ringside of local and distant pedigree and commercial buyers who bid
strongly all day.

In line with the current trade for dairy stock around the UK prices were
sensible if not extravagant. There is little doubt that the purchasers
should be back in 3 weeks for more. By all accounts the next sale on
the 24th March comprises an even more attractive array of fresh heifers
and young cows with their calves.
A dozen made 2000gns and more to a top of 2700gns twice.

An October calved, homebred heifer (Lot 58) from the Chelton Lady family
and by Denmire Noah (Talent x Gibson Neoma) sold back in calf to Talent
for 2700gns to T Forsyth, Isle Farm, Whithorn, Newton Stewart. Her heifer
calf by Morningview Ashlar made 650gns to Firm of R Forsyth, Baltier
Farm, Whithorn, Newton Stewart.
Also at 2700gns was a 2nd Lactation cow by Talent from the famous Vaakje
family. Calved in early October and served by Regancrest Design. She
now joins Messrs Cottam Ltd’s top quality herd for 2700gns at Wardwarrow,
Holmrook, Cumbria.
Attracting much interest to was a super batch of dry cows and in calf
heifers showing great quality udder promise. These calving heifers booked
to be extremely good value, averaging to just over £1600 each.
Going by the quality of animals, with great production and type, very
sensible breeding and management, the next of the three Holywood Sales
on Wednesday 24th March deserves to be equally well attended and provides
a chance to acquire sound cattle at sensible prices.
