Annual show and sale of
Rare & Minority Breeds of Cattle, Sheep Pigs, Poultry & Waterfowl

Saturday 19th September 2009

The annual RBST approved Rare, Minority and Traditional sale of cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry and waterfowl held at Borderway was a huge success with a virtual total “sell out”. A huge crowd of breeders and enthusiasts were present and excellent prices were achieved throughout.

Not only were the top prices higher than last year but the all important averages exceeded expectations. This was partly a reflection of the current commercial boost in prices.

In the cattle section, a Belted Galloway cow and calf unit consigned by Holmegate Farms Ltd of Carlisle sold the top price for £1,650 and went to J Blacklock of Lancashire.

A donkey mare and foal shown by Mrs Burton of Hexham was sold for £1,100 and was knocked down to Messrs Hughes of Wigton, Cumbria.

The highlight of the pig section was a Tamworth gilt from Mr TL Ballantine Dykes of Arkleby, Wigton. She sold in pig for £180 and goes to Messrs Gardner of Bishop Auckland.

In the sheep section, the last ram in the Kerry Hill classes secured the leading price tag at £600. Shown by Messrs Price of Churchstoke, Powys, there registered March born lamb ram sired by the 2008 Royal Welsh Champion, was sold to Messrs McKinney of Kirkby in Furness.

A Greyface Dartmoor aged ram from Mr A Jackson of Kirkpatrick Fleming, Lockerbie sold for £320 to Borders breeder Mr JH Burn of Duns, Berwickshire.

The Hampshire Down classes sold to a top price of £270 for a shearling gimmer shown by Mrs Robinson of Wigton. Her March 2008 born female was purchased by Messrs Barrow of Broughton in Furness.

The Ryeland section also saw a leading price of £270 for yearling ewe also shown by Mrs Robinson of Wigton. Dumfriesshire enthusiast, David Irving, successfully secured this purchase.

The leading price for the Coloured Ryeland classes was £260 achieved by Mrs Trimmings of Morpeth for her shearling gimmer. This registered entry was purchased by KG Stone of Norwich.

A small entry of Wensleydales reached a top price of £200 for a shearling ram shown by Messrs Prescott of Alnwick, Northumberland. This 18 month old ram went to Messrs Dawkins of Brampton, Cumbria.

A record entry of 1000 lots of poultry and waterfowl were catalogued with several entries making over £200 to a top of £300 for an exquisite pair of white call ducks shown by Mr Chris Dick of Peebles. Numerous cages exceeding £100 for pairs or trios and a great variety of species were on offer.
