Bluefaced Leicester Females
Monday 19th January 2009
The annual show and sale of Bluefaced Leicester females attracted enormous interest on Monday 19th January 2009, with many buyers attending the sale from as far afield as Devon, Powys, Derbyshire, Ayrshire and Northern Ireland.

Topping the sale at 2,400gns was a gimmer shown by regular consignors to the sale Messrs Wight of the Midlock flock based in Lanarkshire. This N25 Nunscleugh sired female, and from a S2 Hafrena bred mother sold in lamb to the V3 Bull & Cave bred ram. She was keenly bid for and was finally sold to Messrs Hill of Whitewall, Appleby.
Three of the top four leading prices were consigned from the Midlock flock with 16 lots averaging out at just short of £1,070 a head.
The next leading price tag was 2,000gns also sold by Midlock. Another gimmer, but sired by the home bred ram Midlock Controversey and out of a N25 Nunscleugh sired mother. She sold scanned in lamb to a X1 Riddings ram and goes to Derbyshire breeder Ian Gregory from the Peak Forest, Buckston.
The third leading price ticket from Midlock was 1,900gns. This eye catching gimmer, sired by a Y1 Breck House ram and out of a N25 Nunscleugh bred dam, sold in lamb to the V3 Bull & Cave ram and goes north into Ayrshire for enthusiast Robert McInnes of Grassyards, Kilmarnock.

Following at 1,900gns was a gimmer exhibited by W Hutchinson & Sons of the Kirkby Redgate flock from Kirkby Stephen. A daughter of the W1 Keer ram, she won the reserve supreme championship ticket at the pre-sale judging. She sold in lamb to an A1 Hewgill bred sire and travels to Yorkshire for PJ Broughton of Thornhill Farm, Whitby.

Local breeder Mr Neil Marston of Cockermouth ably judged the pre-sale
classes and presented the championship rosette to lamb shown from the
Hewgill flock of Messrs Lord, Kirkby Stephen. This very attractive lady,
a daughter of K1 Lunesdale ram and out of a homebred mother, sold for
1,800gns and was successfully purchased by Walter Sutcliffe of Horton
in Ribblesdale, Settle.

A further two lambs sold for 1,800gns each and came from the Craigskean flock of John and Margaret Kerr from Maybole, Ayrshire. Both are daughters of Z1 Firth ram and out of V1 Ty Gwyn sired mother. They were both knocked down to Northern Ireland breeder Richard Loughridge of Co.Antrim.
