ON-FARM DISPERSAL SALE OF THE CROFTLANDS JERSEY HERD

Tuesday 4th August 2009
For Messrs Hughes, Seaville Farm, Silloth, Wigton, Cumbria

sale catalogueOn Tuesday 4th August Jersey breeders from all over the UK and Ireland attended the dispersal sale of the Croftlands herd at Seaville Farm, Silloth in Cumbria. The herd was owned by Norman and Colin Hughes who over a life time of dedicated breeding had developed a tremendous Jersey herd. Milk production combined with high butterfat and protein percentages had been one of the main objectives of the breeding programme at Croftlands; however the confirmation was impressive with many cows and heifers attracting the bids from some of the UK’s top breeders.

Top price was 2,500gns for Croftlands Explosion Leanne, she was a two year old heifer who had almost finished her first lactation, still giving nineteen kilograms. This beautiful uddered heifer was sired by Grayridge Explosion who is a son of Hollylane Renaissance from the Excellent 92 Imperial Elsie. Sister’s to this bull had sold at the Borderway Black and White sale as calves for 5,000gns and 3,000gns and went on to win at Agri Scot in milk. This well bred heifer was purchased by H Buchanan & Son, Laigh Kilphin, Ballantrae, Girvan.

Selling for 2,300gns was a daughter of SHF Centurion Sultan, Croftlands Sultan Ribena was a silky black heifer with a classy udder. She had recently calved on the 2nd July and was giving twenty two kilograms, she can be traced back to the Gaddesden herd and she now joins the herd of J Duckworth, Floors Farm, Kilmaurs, Kilmarnock.

Maternal sister to the top price heifer sold to J&I Watson & Son, Moorhouse Farm, Wigton for 1,900gns. Croftlands Zeebar July was a freshly calved with her third calf giving thirty kilograms and sired by Shellen Zeebar.

RV Mandale & Son, Lambfield Farm, Raughton Head, Carlisle purchased eleven animals, the best of this select group was Croftlands Escalade Fern a third calf cow sired by Ferreira Mannix Escalade selling for 1,550gns.

Grahams Dairies, Airthrey Kerse, Bridge of Allan purchased thirteen cows and heifers. These were mostly freshly calved heifers and cows, one of the stars from this group was Croftlands Signature Brooke sired by Family Hill Avery Signature this heifer had calved on the 25th June and was giving twenty three kilograms and sold for 1,200gns.

The Hughes family would like to thank everyone who helped with the sale and all those who attended and purchased Croftlands jerseys. They hope all the animals become profitable and successful in their new herds.
