Acklington Park Holstein Herd
for J Howie & Sons Acklington Park, Acklington, Morpeth

The Non-Pedigree dairy herd owned by J Howie & Sons, Acklington Park, Morpeth topped at 3000gns, with thirty cows and heifers making over 2000gns and baby calves to 1000gns.
Not only was this a reflection of the current brisk demand for dairy cattle generally but a measure of the lovely quality of stock.
Homebred for many years and developed using well bred stock sires from “Morwick” with some AI bulls, the cattle displayed power, great udders and natural dairyness. The youngstock were well grown and from high producing cows.
The fact that the herd was loose housed did not seem to deter the buyers, such is the demand for cattle.

The top price cow at 3000gns was by a Moet test bull, Moet Racy Russell from a Lord Lily, then a Sunny Boy, all with good production, butterfat and protein. She sold fresh in her fourth lactation and much to the delight of the retiring dedicated and skilful herdsman Mike Hirst, she now joins the nearby top pedigree “Morwick” herd. Her three week old calf by Burlane Tennyson made 1000gns.
Close behind at 2800gns was a glorious fresh heifer by Audhutton Adonis. She now joins Messrs Marrs’ top herd at Broomhills, Great Orton. Her calf made 800gns by Morwick Bellboy.
The overall average for the cows and heifers with heifer calves averaged
£1683 included cows up to 11 lactations and the life by life average
of £1351 was a measure of the quality of stock and management.
