Pedigree Dairy Day Show and Sale
Wednesday 15th April 2009
The April Pedigree Dairy Sale at Borderway on Wednesday 15th April 2009 included a great variety of good quality Holstein, Jersey and Ayrshire cows and heifers, as well as the first consignment to disperse the milking portion of the Wilson families much respected “Snow” Holstein Herd.
A small but very decent catalogue of fresh heifers and few young cows saw a virtual 100% clear out with top fresh Black & White and Red & White heifers making consistently 2000gns.

The show was ably judged by Michael Dixon from Beech House, Hayton, Aspatria. His Champion in the Border & Lakeland section was one from the Wilson’s dispersal consignment, the 3900gns Snow Minnie 33, a December calved heifer by Braedale Freelance from three high yielding, long wearing, Excellent dams.

The Reserve Champion was a lovely uddered Talent daughter from the Howie family’s Morwick herd, she sold for 2300gns.

The first prize winning Jersey heifer also boasted an awesome pedigree. Bred and shown by top Jersey and Holstein breeder Robert Hunter of the Clydevalley herd, near Shotts, Lanarkshire. Out of the EX92, Grahamr Sambo Twinkle she has three full sisters, all VG heifers and all being successgul at top shows, she was sold for 2600gns.

The first prize Red & White heifer was one of a very good consignment from Arthur Lawrie’s noted Cuthill Towers herd, which were making up to 2400gns. Also at 2400gns was one of an equally sought after batch of fresh heifers from the well bred Halmyre herd of the Davidson family.
The Snow Sale comprised 70 cows and heifers bring the most recently calved section of the herd, all calving since late November/December to early April.
They were typical of this large, nicely bred workman like herd, displaying great udders, strong conformation and natural milkyness without being extreme. The quality of the herd which is very commercially run by Geoff and Marjorie Wilson and their family comes as a result of astute breeding, hard work and a lifetime of devotion.

The top priced “Snow” animal was a Braedale Freelance daughter from three Excellent cows of the Minnie family. Calved in early December and bred back to Goldwyn. She made 3900gns and joins the herd of CM Haigh, Arey Hemming, Glenluce, Newton Stewart.

At 3000gns was a lovely 2nd calf cow, also December calved, by Goldwyn.
Among this unselected batch of cows & heifers, which included fourth
and fifth calvers were thirty making £2000 and more.
