Carlisle Annual two day show and sale of
CONTINENTAL CROSS STORE CATTLE

HEIFER TOPS TWO DAY EVENT AT £5,200

At Carlisle on Friday 21st & Saturday 22nd March 2008, Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their annual spring two day show and sale of continental cross store cattle. A tremendous entry of 2,731 cattle were forward for sale.

Over the two days an outstanding standard of quality cattle were on offer to the biggest company of buyers seen in the north of England for some time. A total of 186 different purchasers were in attendance over the two days.

Trade was said by many to be the dearest seen for some ten years breaking prices obtained in other Cumbrian centres at recent sales.

The Friday sale saw 1,349 heifers forward for sale and all classes sold well, especially the flashy export types and heifers with breeding potential. An overall sale average of £719.26 for 1,349 heifers was obtained which is a rise of £91.58 on the year.

The pre-sale show was judged by Alistair Vance of Whithorn who had 66 heifers in total to judge consigned by 24 difference vendors.

After much deliberation Alistair awarded the overall champion to a very stylish Limousin cross heifer shown by Messrs Trafford of Bassenthwaite Hall Farm, Keswick Their home bred heifer was greatly admired and is sired by the registered Limousin bull, Waindale Potential, and bred out of a three quarter British Blue mother. She later went on to sell for £2,800 and was purchased by the judge, Alistair Vance.

The reserve champion rosette went to Helen Claxton of Newton High House, Stocksfield for her British Blue cross heifer. This blue roan marked heifer was sired by an unregistered British blue bull and was purchased for £1,900 by Alan Hall of Preston Tilery Farm, Darlington.

The top price of the heifer section and of the two day event was £5,200 for a Limousin cross consigned by Messrs JR Graham & Ptrs of Greenshields, Biggar. This 9 month old red heifer is a daughter of the registered Limousin sire Redstone United and was out of a 7/8 home bred Limousin cow. She caught the eye of many show men and was keenly bid for and now goes to north of Scotland for enthusiast Ewan MacPherson of Mill Farm House, Oban.

The Saturday sale saw 1,382 steers forward for sale. This day was also a great success for all classes of steer with customers for all types, good, strong, and small. An overall average of £721.23 for 1,382 head achieved an increase of £53.21 on last year.

The pre-sale show was judged by Paul Tippets of Shifnal, Shropshire and was again highly successful with 43 cattle out on parade.

Father and son, Colin and James Little of The Guards, Ireby collected the Championship award with their British Blue cross which was sired by the registered Blue bull Woldnewton Rambo and is out of a pedigree Limousin cow, a daughter of the noted Fanfaron sire. This black and white steer later sold for £1,500 and goes to SE Sellers of Green Top , Derbyshire.

Taking the reserve championship slot was Messrs Trafford of Bassenthwaite Hall Farm, Keswick with their black Limousin cross. This was the first calf to be sold sired by their herds new French junior stock bull Vallion and was bred out of 7/8 British Blue cross mother. He sold for £1,700 to Welsh enthusiast Mr Jim Hollingsworth of Mold, Clwyd.

Top price achieved in the steer section was £2,000 for a Limousin cross shown by Messrs Graham of Miller Hill. This black steer was bred from a Limousin cross Blue cow and later sold to Gavin Scott of Gateside, Linlithgow.
