WILODGE BULL AT 4400GNS LEADS SOLID NEWARK LIMOUSIN SALE

A twenty-seven-month old bull from the Wilodge herd of DA Williams, Lodge Hill Farm, Park Lane, Shifnal, Shropshire made 4,400gns and lead a solid trade at the British Limousin Cattle Society’s first official sale of 2008, held at Newark Livestock Market, Nottingham, on Saturday 5th January 2008.

Five bulls made over 2500gns, with 22 bulls selling to an average of £2150 and representing a 60% clearance rate. In addition 31 females sold readily with 24 bulling and maiden heifers averaging a solid £1207.

A large crowd was in attendance at the sale, an extra fixture in the annual schedule, organized by the BLCS to directly help those breeders who faced the restrictions of being in the Bluetongue Surveillance Zone.

The leading price bull from DA Williams at 4,400gns was the October 2005 born Adam, a French bull bred by Mr. Alain Pezet, Mas De Moureau. Placed first in the first show class of the day, this bull is sired by Neuf whose dam is Jungle, a daughter of the noted AI bull Haricot. Out of Reveuse, this bull weighing 1080kgs, was purchased by K&A Watchorn & Sons, Fair Farm, Waltham-on-the-Wolds, Melton Mowbray, Leics.

The pre-sale Show judge was James Hazard from the noted Mereside herd at Saltby Heath Farm, Skillington, Grantham, Lincs. Five of the seven top priced bulls carried red tickets and reflected a good show of top end bulls. Mr. Hazard commented, “I was very pleased with the first prize line-up. They were modern Limousin bulls with good tops, loins and all round carcases and would have stood well at any Limousin show.”

Mr Hazard’s Champion bull was Threaphurst Brutus, a Tunnelby Monkeytricks son out of the Ronick Hawk cow Threaphurst May. This stylish March 2006 born bull was presented by MJ Bennett, Clough House Farm, Threaphurst Lane, Stockport Cheshire. In the sale the bull left the ring unsold at a bid of 4800gns.

The second top price was the 3800gns paid for the winner of the second class, Coachhouse Bertie from Messrs Heald & Co, Home Farm, Grove, Retford, Notts. This rising two-year-old bull is by the Oceleot son Bailea Ulsterman, the Coachhouse herd sire which was purchased for 11,000gns at Carlisle in 2005. Bertie who won Reserve Supreme Champion at the pre-sale judging, is out of the Haltcliffe Picasso sired Coachhouse Tiggy. Snapping this bull up was RB Ingamells & Son, Peartree Farm, Barkstone, Grantham, Lincs.

TM Carr, Redway Farm, Waterfall Waterhouses, Stoke on Trent, who runs the Timway pedigree herd purchased Scorboro Barcelona for 3000gns. This bull presented by JCG Bloom & Son, Decoy Farm, Scorborough, Driffield, East Yorkshire is a big son of the Ringway President sired Loganburn Talisman. Out of the Elrick Raketeer sired Scorboro Ulex, this bull carried a Beef Value of LM+31 and weighed 970kgs at the time of sale.

The Wilodge herd also sold the opening bull in the sale for 2600gns. Again a French bull, Toubib carried some of the breeding of the day’s top price being a son of Haricot. This September 2002 born bull is out of the Gamin sired Ombre. The purchaser was J Stone who runs the pedigree Sandstone herd at The Manor, Grainsby, Grimsby, NE Lincs.

Also at 2600gns was Rachels Bandit presented by D&MLP Woolhouse, Staveley Wold, North Dalton, Driffield, East Yorkshire. This May 2006 born bull is a son of Aldwyck Sirocco and is out of the Ronick Iceman sired Rachels Ozzy. With a Beef Value of LM+32, this bull also sold to a pedigree breeder in the shape of PJ Rowson, Sedgeworth Farm, Carr Lane, Winterton, Scunthorpe, N Lincs who run the Sedgeworth herd. This bull had placed first in class 7 of the pre-sale Show.

A good entry of females met with a ready demand and almost a total clearance. The top priced female was the 2000gns paid for the second calver Rumsden Vanessa presented by Mr. E Sims, Edgefields Farm, Edgefields Lane, Stockton Brook, Stoke-on-Trent. This October 2004 born female was bred by Mr. R Taylor, Uckfield, East Sussex. Its sire was the noted Shatton Pedro famed for his production of first quality primestock show champions. The dam was the Grange Pascal sired Thorndon Toya. Sold with her Navarin sired heifer calf at foot, Simse Chloe, the purchaser was TG&DM Watchorn Ltd, Scalford Lodge, Thorpeside, Melton Mowbray, Leics.

At 1800gns was Ironstone Ballerina from Smiths of Bloxham, Milton Road, Bloxham, Banbury, Oxon. This October 2006 born maiden heifer was sired by Ardlea S255 and is out of Wintles Ufortythree. The purchaser was JJ Comer, New Moon Leaze Farm, Braydon, Swindon for their Moonleaze pedigree herd.

Also at 1800gns was the embryo calf Millington Blossom from Millington Grange Estate, Cold Skin Farm, Millington, York. Another maiden heifer, this January 2006 born calf is by the noted French sire Domino and is out of a French bred female, Neige. This animal also went to a pedigree herd in the form of the Stain herd of TJ Denby, Longlands Farm, Withern, Alford, Lincs.

7 cows and heifers served and/or suckling £1,462.50
