Show and Sale of Pedigree & Non-Pedigree Galloway Cattle FRIDAY 29th FEBRUARY 2008

On Friday 29th February 2008, Harrison & Hetherington Limited held the annual spring show and sale of pedigree and non-pedigree Galloway cattle.

Although there was a disappointing show for numbers forward, all classes met with a terrific enquiry to the huge ringside of purchasers drawn from all parts of the country.

Barlaes Freeman

The pre-sale judging was most ably carried out by Mr Paul Whitfield of Haltwhistle, Northumberland. The male championship was presented to the winning junior bull shown by R & M Fergusson of Barlaes, Castle Douglas. Barlaes Freeman, a March 2006 born son of Barlaes Challenger, also collected the Lady Hudson Cup for the Supreme Male Championships of the pre-sale judging. He was successfully sold for the top price of the sale 2,600gns going to D Weekes of Twyn Ffilkins, Caerphilly.

Barlaes Brownie 176th

The female championship was also won by Messrs Fergusson of Barlaes with their senior bulling heifer Barlaes Brownie 176th. This very stylish heifer, another progeny of Barlaes Challenger, sold for the joint top female price tag of 1,100gns to JA Morphet & Son of High Birkwith Farm, Settle.

Messrs Morphet purchased several animals from the sale which also included the other top price female price of 1,100gns. Shown by JM & D Maxwell of Blairvockie Farm, Glasgow, Ben Lomond Nike a senior bulling heifer is sired by Landline of Romesbeoch.

Also reaching over the 1,000gn mark were two other bulling heifers both selling for 1,050gns. The first to enter the ring was Tansy 37th of Skitby offered by George Forrester of Skitby, Carlisle and was sold to Messrs Wallace of Farneyshields, Hexham. The second to be sold was Fiona 31st of High Creoch shown by G & K Gilligan of High Creoch, Gatehouse of Fleet and was purchased by G Hutton of Setmabanning, Keswick.

Non-pedigree heifers sold up to £900 for a bulling heifer consigned by JW Forster of Smithsteads, Bewcastle. In the blue grey heifer section a batch sold for £820 from Messrs Wallace of Farneyshields, Hexham.
