Just over four decades of Shetland Pony breeding came under the hammer on Saturday at Borderway, Carlisle, when Norman Blackburn of the Newton Stud held a genuine reduction sale of his miniature Shetland Ponies.

On offer were 60 entries of ponies along with stud books, tack, carts and carriages. A huge audience of new and established breeders gathered to support this superb catalogue offering.

Top Price Newton Sadie Girl 2,500gns
Newton Sadie Girl

In the pony section the leading price tag was 2,500gns for a piebald filly Newton Sadie Girl. A daughter of Earlsdon Royal King, this very stylish lady carried a wealth of breeding in her pedigree and was sold having been at pasture with Nemphlar Toffee Crisp. The successful purchaser was local enthusiast GR Brass of Bridge End Farm, Kirkby Stephen.

Close behind and selling for 2,450gns was another piebald filly, Newton Gypsie Rose a three year old. Sired by Foxleys Buzby and carrying Kerswell and Kirkstall bloodlines, she sold as having been at pasture with Toffee Crisp. Gypsie Rose travels north to Aberdeen for NS Wilson of Alford.

Also selling for over the 2,000gn mark, was Croft Jenna a bay dun mare. Got by Birling Sebastien, she was sold as having been at pasture with Little Dandy of Newton for 2,100gns. Jenna also makes the journey north to Aberdeenshire for NS Wilson.

A mare and foal followed at 1,750gns. Croft Elegance a bay daughter of Hippominimus Champion and her filly foal, Newton Elegance, attracted the attention of DJ Smith of Middleton, Nr Tamworth.

In the cart and carriage section the top price of 3,500gns was attained for the immaculate red Cheval Liberte Model 2005 pullman. Successful buyer was K Wigley of Bretherton, Lancashire.
