Montbeliarde cattle create massive interest!
On the 17th December 2008 at the Borderway Sale centre there were two
excellent consignments of Montbeliarde cattle from two of the UK’s
leading breeders. Lordswood Farms from Somerset and F. Harrison & Son
Penrith sold a total of 40 Montbeliarde cattle that saw trade peak at
2,850gns for a very classy in calf heifer sired by Oviedo JB.

| Production Sale of Montbeliardes
from Lordswood Farms in action |
The commercial attributes of Montbeliarde dairy cattle have led to rapid
growth in the use of this robust breed in dairy herds throughout the
world. The first Montbeliarde heifers were imported into the UK by Lordswood
Farms in 1993 and successive generations have been bred using the best
available bulls from France. A balanced approach to breeding has produced
cows that are capable of achieving high milk yields over several lactations,
whilst maintaining excellent fertility and delivering high quality beef
calves, from forage-based systems. In addition, the high residual value
of these cows, at the end of a long working life, generates another valuable
income stream. Earlier in 2008 a Montbeliarde cow from Lordswood Farms
set a new record cull cow price in Frome Livestock market, selling for £1170.
The beefing quality of the Montbeliarde has long been recognised in France,
where some major retailers offer a premium for the meat. Growing dependency
on beef from the dairy herd in the UK, means that the Montbeliarde is
well placed to meet the demands of today’s market.
