PEDIGREE HOLSTEIN FEMALES & BULLS
Wednesday 10th September 2008

REPORT

As if the dire weather wasn’t enough to dampen enthusiasm, the dreadful timing of the bluetongue zoning changes up north was enough to confuse and quieten buyers at the Annual Autumn Dairy bull and female sale at Carlisle because it was virtually impossible for Scottish buyers to take stock from England or Wales.

The sale was split in half to accommodate those north of the border. As a result, and as expected, the Lockerbie half of the sale was a great success with heifers to 2800gns and bulls to 5000gns.

In Lockerbie the top price heifer was a Juror Ford daughter from Brian Yates’ Logan herd, and one of their noted “Roxy” family.

The bull section’s and the overall leading bid came from Montrose buyers Usan Estates for the impeccably bred “Queenscairn Kimble” from the Shank’s of Kelso, by the Picston Shottle out of a VG88 (2yr) Comestar Theros heifer, this striking 18mth old bull is bred from a great line of the famous “Kimo” family.

In Carlisle things were harder work of course but the result was satisfactory. Females and bulls were down on last sale, but this was obviously just a one-off hiccup due to the weather and bluetongue. Anyway the trade held together pretty well with heifers topping at 2300gns for smart daughter of Markwell Kite out of an Excellent, 14400kg cow from the Cannons of “Espland”.

The long journey from the Welsh Borders rewarded Messrs Davies of “Gornal” with top price bull at Carlisle, a 3000gns son of “Crosswell Carden 2” from five successive Excellent Nannette dams
