Carlisle Annual two day show and sale of
CONTINENTAL CROSS STORE CATTLE

Friday 23rd
& Saturday 24th March 2007

£5,000 TOPS TWO DAY CALF SHOW & SALE

The UK’s leading two day show and sale of continental cross suckled heifer and bullock calves presented a catalogued entry of 2,537 head. The sale has the reputation of being the premier spring sale in the UK for both volume and quality and once again both vendors and purchasers travelled to Borderway to ensure that the 2007 event was the best ever as prices attained for both days saw a considerable rise.

The Friday began with master judge, Ian Wildgoose of Chesterfield, being presented with over 60 quality heifers for judging. The Royal Bank of Scotland perpetual trophy was presented to Andrew Kirkbride of Flimby for his Belgian Blue cross heifer which was sired by the registered bull, Ballyclough Ullysses and bred from a Limousin cross mother. Signing the cheque at £2,600 was Alan Hall of Preston Tilery, Darlington.

The reserve championship ticket was won by Len Skelton of Low House Farm, Maryport for his Limousin cross entry. This almost black coloured heifer which was sired by the Limousin bull and out of a Belgian Blue cross dam. She later sold for £1,950 and was purchased by WT McMaster of Larne.

Leading the prices on the day at £5,000 was a black Limousin cross shown by Northumberland enthusiast John Smith-Jackson of Haltwhistle. This 12 month old heifer, sired by the registered Limousin bull, Cloughhead Titanic and bred out of a Limousin cross Belgian Blue mother, was sold to David and Mary Cormack of Thirsk.
Trade throughout the first day was stupendous with the final average for all heifers sold being a staggering £627.68 a rise of £96.28 on the year.

The second days events also saw the top price in the steer section reach up to £5,000 again for a Limousin cross. Shown by local consignor Peter Richardson of Bassenthwaite Lake, Keswick this stylish black steer attracted the eye of C Alford of Taunton.

Conducting the judging on Saturday was expert feeder Tom Barton of Ashton in Makerfield, Wigan. He awarded the championship to a Belgian Blue consigned by Christine Williams of DA Williams, Shifnal, Shropshire. Her entry was sired by the homebred bull Wilodge Ulex and was out of a Limousin cross show heifer which has already produced the 2003 Smithfield Baby Beef Champion. The steer sold for £950 to A Dickinson of Ashbourne.
