A virtual clearance of cattle prevailed at the spring show and sale of pedigree Simmental cattle at Borderway on Friday 27th April 2007.
Topping the sale at 3,200gns was the days supreme champion shown by noted breeder Hugo Arnold of Hockenhull Farms Ltd, Chester. Junior bull Hockenhull Tonga, a January 2006 born son of the Royal Show winner Lynfield Pointer and bred out of a Blackford Harvester sired mother, he sold to the days judge Sandy McDowall of Glenluce, Newton Stewart. Following at 2,800gns was events reserve male champion Taurus Topic exhibited by Somerset breeders RH & VM Loud of Alstone Court Farm, Highbridge. This Scotland Hooray Henry sired 16 month old bull bred out of a Brinkton Brilliant show winning daughter, was knocked down to MacAuley Land Use Research based at Shotts, Lanarkshire. An early entry into the sale ring offered by local breeder Mrs A Trafford of Springfield Farm, Cockermouth took the next leading price of 2,400gns. Rooklea Starwars, a May 2005 sired son of Hepplewhite Kong and out of another Brinkton Brilliant bred mother, he was secured by Miss Sybil McBryde of Lochbank, Lockerbie. Following closely at 2,300gns was an intermediate bull shown by Yorkshire breeders I & M Steele of Easington, Hull. Blakewell Schubert an October 2005 son of Blackford Harvester, he now travels to Powys for ED Jones & Son of Plas Farm, Brecon. Leading the female classes was a cow and calf outfit offered by Northampton based breeders S & C Evans of Astcote, Towcester. Autumn calver, Astcote Robyn, a Blackford Harvester daughter, and her August born heifer calf were knocked down at 2,600gns to J & K Martin of Lower Muirhouse, Lanark. An in calf heifer exhibited by regular consignor, WJ Hollingsworth of Midhope Hall Farm, Sheffield sold for the next female leading price tag at 2,300gns. Midhope Rhoda, an August 2004 born Dyfed Lord sired daughter, sold in calf to Pasturehouse Paleface and went to T & D Henry of Knockallan Farm, Castle Douglas. Averages – 21 bulls £1,935.00; 5 cows served and/or suckling £1,566.60; 12 served heifers £1,483.13; 5 maiden heifers £1,081.50; 1 weaned bull calf £735.00; 1 weaned heifer calf £504.
