CLOUGHHEAD MAIDEN HEIFER LEADS The sale from the Cloughhead, Archena, Longoaks and Carne pedigree Limousin herds at Borderway on Friday 16th November 2007 met with a good trade particularly for the maiden heifers on offer. Once again, the buyers comprised of commercial producers competing with established pedigree herds for the lots of their choice. Overall the 91 lots sold, almost a total clearance of animals forward, grossed £120,834. Leading the trade was a sale of maiden heifers from the noted Cloughhead herd of Mr GL Hutton, Setmabanning, Threlkeld, Keswick. Selling all 18 maiden heifers entered the Cloughhead herd averaged an excellent £1875.42. This included the day’s top price of 4000gns paid for Cloughhead Anna. This October 2005 born heifer is the first calf by Cloughhead Uist, a bull that sold for 10,000gns at Carlisle in May 2005. Out of the Heros sired Cloughhead Linda this to price heifer went north to the South West of Scotland and the Allanton herd of Allanton Farming, Allanton Farm, Darvel, Ayrshire. Selling at 2800gns was the March 2006 born Cloughhead Bluebell. This heifer had a deep pedigree being sired by the French bull Ultrabien who has both Domino and Jacot in his pedigree and being out of the Petunia sired Cloughhead Sophie whose mother is Cloughhead Favourite the dam of the prolific Cloughhead Lord. Purchasing this pedigree package was Herries Farm, Bow House Farm, Glencaple, Dumfries who have a quality Limousin suckler herd of 300 head. The very next lot, Cloughhead Baroness made 2500gns when selling to local breeders SJ Nixon, Hunters Hall, Southerfield, Abbeytown, Carlisle for their Huntershall herd. By another French sire Urluberlu, this May 2006 born heifer is out of Cloughhead Uvette, a daughter of the bull Petunia whose progeny have sold to a top price of 42,000gns. In a dispersal sale of the Archena Herd on behalf of Mrs A Hawkshaw, Aulton Farm, Kilmaurs, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire the top price of 3000gns was paid for the promising bull Archena Barney. This eleven-month-old bull is an AI calf by the Ronick Iceman sired Ryedale Paragon whose progeny have sold for up to10,000gns. He is out of Archena Rachel who is a daughter of Archena Lauren the principle bloodline in the herd. Purchaser of this bull calf was JE Jordon & Son, Old Moor Farm, Longhirst, Morpeth, Northumberland who run the Longhirst pedigree herd. Two animals made 2100gns. The first was the coming seven-year-old
Archena Rachel. This Ronick Hawk cow had had four calves, three of
which were in the sale, and was sold AI’d to Haltcliffe President.
Again, out of Archena Lauren, whose calves have sold up to 7200gns,
this cow was purchased by MJ Agnew, Little Airies Farm, Kirkcolm, Stranraer. The second dispersal of the day was the Longoaks Herd of Mr David M Joseph, Willoxton Farm, Ilston, Gower, Swansea. The top price paid was the 2700gns for the one stock bull in the herd, Sheelin Tiger. This five-year-old bull was bred by MJ Brunton, Hillcross Farm, Holycross Hill, Wormley-West-End. This five-year-old bull had a long and distinguished show record with a principle title amongst many being the 2004 Reserve Male Champion at the Royal Show. By Ronick Hawk he is out of Sheelin Jan who herself sold for 10000gns in 2004. Moving north, Sheelin Tiger was sold to the Garraron pedigree herd of JS&LD Adam & Son, Garraron Farm, Ardfern, Lochgilphead. At 2300gns was Greenwell Shevorn bred by Mr&Mrs JT Nattress, Greenwell Farm, Lanchester, Co. Durham. A six-year-old cow, Shevorn is by Ronick Member and is out of the Bedell Maurice dam Greenwell Chevorn. She was sold with her fifth calf at foot, a bull calf named Longoaks Celebrity by Tiret and was purchased by the Whitty pedigree herd of A Whitham, 154 The Crofts, Silloth, Carlisle. Greenwell Tamzin, another Nattress bred cow by Ronick Member also made 2300gns when selling to JA&JN Wade, Royd House Farm, Cononley, Keighley, West Yorkshire. A December 2002 born cow out of the Genial sired Greenwell Jodie, she was sold with her bull calf at foot Longoaks Carilse again by Tiret. In a sale of heifers from the Carne Herd for Messrs DT Roberts & Son, Cwrt-Y-Carne Farm, Gorseinon, Swansea, the top price was the 1350gns paid for the in-calf heifer Carne Abrina. Born in May 2005, this heifer is by Dyfri Rainman and is out of Carne Sabrina.
