Northern Ireland breeders make a clean sweep of
Championships and top It was a day of Irish smiles all round as the Northern Irish swept the board at the May Show and Sale of Pedigree Blonde Bulls and Females. Again it was a sale that was underpinned with a sound demand for good commercial bulls, with averages increasing by £280 from the corresponding sale last year.
Leading the pack was Richard J Mowbray, 34 Droit Road, Newton Stewart, Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland with his reserve overall champion, Droit Ash. An impressive senior bull he sold for the sales’ top price of 5,000gns to join the Northorpe herd of Messrs CT Addison, Tower Farm, Lincolnshire. Ash is a May 05 son of Ardmore Steakhouse, himself purchased for 6,000gns at Perth from David Grant. Steakhouse is sired by Ardmore Maltsman an Everest son out of a Donald cow. Ash’s dam is a homebred cow, Droit Pansy, a Shapfell Lazerbeam daughter out of a Kilboy Dargle cow. Shapfell Lazerbeam was purchased as an 11 month old calf for 3,000gns from M K Harrison and he was sired by Hadley Esquire, a Fortescue Agustus son. Droit Ash also had the figures to match the looks, boasting an EBV of BA27, putting him in the top 7% of the breed. Identical breeding was behind Mr Mowbray’s tremendous pen of three bulls. An impressive cross indeed! The reserve senior bull was also from the Droit stable, Droit Adam who again was sired by Steakhouse, on an another homebred Lazerbeam daughter, Songbird, she is out of a dam sired by Whistley Hansard. Adam also had good figures, boasting BA22 putting him into the breed’s top 20%. This May 05 bull later sold for 3,800gns to join the Lochhead herd of L Laird & Sons, Lochhead, East Wemyss, Kirkaldy, East Fife. Completing the line up for Mr Mowbray was Droit Amazon, another May 05 son of Steakhouse on yet another Lazerbeam daughter, Droit Samantha, a Vicount grandaughter. A third prize winner in the show, he again sported a Beef Value of BA20 putting him into the breed’s top 25%, he later sold for 3,600gns to Southern Ireland to M & M Cunningham, Drimmian, Mohill, Co.Leitirm.
Supreme champion in the show was the 17 month old Ivaniskey Asboldasbrass. He was brought forward by the McElroy family of Ivan, Ruth and William of 132 Aughnaskeagh Road, Dromara, Dromore, Co Dowm, Northern Ireland. A junior bull, he caught the eye of the Judge David Clark from the Garngour herd, Lesmahagow, for his superb muscling and extra width. No stranger to the show ring, Asboldasbrass already had the Northern Irish Calf Championship 2006 to his name. He boasted an impressive pedigree being full embryo brother to the Royal Ulster champion in 2003 and 2004 Ivaniskey Suzanna. Suzanna was also named the best beef cow in Northern Ireland during 2004. Asboldasbrass is sired by the noted Whistley Dollar, an Abricot son, a sire that needs no mention and who’s breeding is regularly seen in the top selling animals. His dam is a homebred cow Ivaniskey Oreanna, a Genus Hugo daughter. Oreanna is a daughter of Hillhead Leanna, a Hillhead Clint daughter. He was sold for 4,200gns to work in the commercial herd of Messrs Taylor, Fellend, Bewaldeth, Cockermouth, Cumbria. The Reserve Junior Champion and second prize winner to Asboldasbrass was a full embryo brother to the Champion, Ivaniskey Armani. He later tempted Claire Everitt, Jollybody Farm, Stanhope, Bishop Auckland to bid for him and the hammer fell at 3,500gns.
Selling to 4,500gns was an entry from Peter De Giles at Swanton Farm, Bilsington, Ashford, Kent. This was Mr Giles top price from selling at Carlisle. Featuring home breeding on both sides of the pedigree, Bilsington Appian is sired by Bilsington Snowdon, an Everest son out of a Bilsington Holdfast daughter. Appian’s dam is Bilsington Pia, a Ravensworth Mitchel daughter, who goes back to Whistley Dauphin on the dam line. Tempted to fork out for this second prize winner were pedigree breeders CJ & VP Squire, Ireland Farm, Coryton, Okehampton, Devon who were buying for their Coryton Herd. Making 3,000gns was one from R G Davies’s National Champion Pedigree Herd at Fronfedw, Ciliau Aeron, Lampeter. They presented Fronfedw Ben, a twin who’s dam Fronfedw Fflur is in her seventeenth year, and rearing a heifer calf again this year. Fflur is a Sornfallow VIP daughter out of a Totterridge Sceptre daughter. Ben was sired by Genus’s succesfull bull, Whitefield Leader. He heads back to Wales with M Wakelin, Cwm Clyd, Llanilar, Aberystwyth. This 3rd prize winner boasted an EBV of BA24 which was in the top 15% of the breeds and which qualified him for the Welsh BQI scheme. The bulls eligible for the Welsh BQI scheme at Carlisle were in hot demand - averaging £3,700. It is surely the case that Performance Recording is seen as a valuable tool by commercial farmers when honing in on bulls. Performance recorded bulls with good figures and conformation found homes easily. Making the trip up from Bristol was David Knight with Doncombe Artic Roll, another son of their influential senior herd sire, Druk Lance. His dam was a homebred cow, Doncombe Pavalova, and Aveton Monet daughter. Interestingly this bull featured a double cross of Druk Heathcliffe, who is the sire of Druk Lance and was also maternal great grand sire. He was sold for 2,600gns into South West Scotland to Messrs Barrowman of Stanraer. Artic Roll was also performance recorded and had an EBV of BA18.
Champion female was Allerston Belle from R T Ward, New South Farm, Allerston, Pickering, North Yorkshire. Belle was the youngest female forward being just 13 months on sale day. She was sired by Douthwaite Sid, a Joyau son out of a Ustin daughter. The dam was Broomley Urn, bred by John Gibb, she was sired by Hackleton Phoenix out of a Hallfield Mitterand daughter. She tempted TB Moorhouse & Sons, Fouldshaw Farm, Dacre, Harrogate to pay 1200gns for her. The reserve female champion was Broomley Ailsa from J & M Gibb, Jubilee Buildings, Broomley, Stocksfield, Northumberland. An April 05 heifer she was sold as running with Millend Voodoo. She heads over the water to Southern Ireland to new owners B Mooney, Dunbur Farm, Dunbur, Wicklow, Co.Wicklow, Eire who gave 1200gns for her. Averages:
