Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Show & Sale There was once again a tremendous display of quality Holsteins at the October Border & Lakeland Club Show and Sale at Borderway Sales Centre. There was a one hundred percent clearance resulting in an overall average for cows and heifers sold of £1430. Judging the show was Jim Currie from “Carlinside” herd in Lanark. Impressed with the high standard and beautiful uddered cattle shown; Mr Currie selected Wolfa Lyster Gala as his overall Champion. She was sired by Tcet Lyster and decends from a family with 7 Generations of Excellent or VG dams. The famous Brynhyfryd Gala family in Wales.
Gala was bred and owned by Messrs M Armstrong from Great Salkeld, Penrith, she went on to sell for the top price of the day at 2,200gns to Messrs Dixon, Beech House, Hayton, Aspatria, Carlisle.
Reserve Champion went to Skirwith Hall Farm with Stowbeck Jackson Clara, a freshly calved cow in her third lactation sired by top type sire Weeton Jackson. She sold for 1480gns and now joins Messrs Hunter, Berrier Head, Berrier, Penrith. Dalesend Farm had a wonderful consignment of animals, from some of their top families. Dalesend Lettice 71 a Canyon Breeze Allen daughter sold for the second highest price of the day for 1800gns. She now joins the herd of Neil Sanderson. Wormanby one of Cumbrians leading breeders also had a strong line up of animals. They had their top price at 1700gns for a fresh heifer with a perfect udder. She was purchased by B Williamson, Marsfield Farm, Butterknowle, Bishop Auckland. The demand for high quality Holstein heifers remains at an all time high and as milk prices continue to increase it may be a wise decision to buy now before heifer prices rise again. Averages Red & White Sale Harrison & Hetherington held their postponed August Sale of Red & White dairy cattle. It was not the largest of shows but the cattle forward were all good types of fresh heifers. The top price of the day went to MW & A Stevenson’s stylish fresh heifer Stevenson’s Nova 52 sired by home bred Stevenson’s Variety she was purchased by TW Fawcett, Little Blencowe Farm, Clencoew, Penrith for 1300gns. Second top price was a Knowe First Priority daughter from L & Davidson & Sons’ Halmyre herd, having calved in early August Halmyre Urr Jinks 379 sold at 1280gns to TR Crone, Bankend, Aikton, Wigton, Cumbria. Averages Jersey Sale The postponed sale of Jerseys also took place on Wednesday, again will a smaller than usual number of entries forward, there was a selection of milkers and young stock present. They had two top prices of 920gns. First into the ring was Janhaven Milly, from Jim Gray this fresh second calver giving 25kgs daily she was purchased by Messrs Thomlinson & Son, Bolton Park, Mealsgate, Carlisle. Also selling for 920gns was M.L & J.M Richardson’s Wheelbirks Dan Intradiction GP81, due to calf at the end of this month she sold to Messrs Hughes, Seaville Farm, Silloth, Wigton.
