The first dairy sale in Borderway Mart following the most recent FMD restrictions was the dispersal sale of Mr David Quayle’s Croesgoch herd, from Moordyke, Wigton, on Wednesday 10th October 2007. After a lifetime of milking cows and being involved with the dairy industry nationally and in Europe, Mr Quayle’s recent ill health brought about this dispersal.
The herd comprised a lot of genuinely productive, framey, mature stock and exciting followers by a variety of well bred stock sires and top AI Canadian and American Bulls. As was expected, despite the inability of the Irish to purchase, the young cows and recently calved heifers in particular were very keenly bid for with prices between 1500 and 1800gns common place. A feature of the sale was the quality and demand of the followers from served heifers to baby calves. There was initially a quite understandable hesitancy amongst buyers because of the 20 day rule then in force but this caution evaporated when quality young cows and heifers reached the ring. Whereas the trade was excellent, the buyers were able to invest in solid bloodlines at sensible prices. Leading Prices:
