Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their Annual Prize Show and Sale of Bluefaced Leicester sheep together with Suffolk and Continental Rams at Kirkby Stephen mart on Sunday 21st October, where there was an entry of 273 head.

Champion Bluefaced Leicester Ram shown by the owner Mr James Porter of Messrs W C Porter & Son, Riddings Farm which sold for £380 to Messrs Braida.

Bluefaced Leicester rams, with the very best of crossing bloodlines found a ready market with 3 ram lambs selling at £1,000 each. The first of these came from Messrs H R Hayton & Son, Asby Grange, sired by the stock ram Lunesdale V38 out of a Lunesdale P29 ewe, it was purchased by Mr B Knowles, High Borrowbridge, Messrs Hayton sold 3 ram lambs to average £607 each. The other 2 top priced ram lambs came from Messrs Lord, Low Dowgill, both sired by Hewgill V45 out of M8 ewes, the first joined the flock of Geoff Wharton, Keisley Farm, Murton and the second was knocked down to Mr D Alderson, East Lowfield, Bowes. Messrs Lord sold 3 ram lambs to average £900. The prize show was kindly sponsored by Novartis Animal Health (local rep., Caroline Walton), Pfizer Animal Health (local rep., Fiona Kidd) and Copley Coal Company, with judging in the hands of Mr J Nutter, Hurst Green.

3rd             D Alderson, East Lowfield - £250 to Mr Featherstone

Ram Lamb:

2nd             Messrs Lord, Low Dowgill – £700 to Messrs Brass, Soulby
3rd            P Sowerby, Langton - £80 to Mr Hoggarth

Suffolk and Continental rams found an exceptional demand with a near total clearance and prices well in advance of vendors expectations.

Bluefaced Leicester ram lambs: £1,000, £500, £320 Asby Grange; £1,000 (2), £700 Low Dowgill; £380, £320 Greenriggs.

Bluefaced Leicester Shearling rams: £380 Riddings Farm; £320, £280, £250 East Lowfield; £300 High Plains, Greenriggs; £220 High Stennerskeugh.

Cheviot rams: £190, £150 High Borrowbridge.

Suffolk rams: £400, £300, £290 Nuncote Nook.

Texel rams: £420, £360, £340, £300, £260, £220, £210 Low Field; £280, £270, £260 West Hope; £260 Hartley Castle; £250, £200 South Road; £210 Wharton Hall.

Texel gimmer lambs: £54 Lowfield.

1st Prize lamb shown by Mr Colin Dent of Messrs W & C W Dent, Greenriggs which sold for £320 to Messrs Thompson of Firbank.

Swaledale Gimmer Lambs

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their Annual Prize Show & Sale of 1,483 Swaledale Gimmer Lambs which averaged £25.36 (-£4 on the year).

The show was kindly judges by Mr J Nutter, Hurst Green, who made the following awards which were kindly sponsored by Eden Farm Supplies (Brough).
