PRIZE SHOW & SALE OF SUCKLED CALVES

At Borderway Mart on Saturday 23rd September 2006, Harrison & Hetherington held their Annual September Show & Sale of suckled calves.

A magnificent show of 1671 tremendous calves were forward to a very strong ring of bidders. Many pens of cattle were well over the £800 barrier and cattle regularly sold over 170p per kilo, with prices regarded by many to have far exceeded pre BSE rates.

An overall average for bullocks and heifers levelled at £637.51.

The show was judged by Mr Jason Wareham of Heathfield, Sussex who awarded the Champion prize to Messrs WI & WE Thompson of Nether Glasslaw, New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire for their Blonde cross heifer which later sold for the top price of day at £2,000. This much admired heifer was keenly bid for and was successfully knocked down to Messrs Clatsworthy and Tippetts of Highbridge, Somerset.

The Reserve Champion was shown by Messrs J Lee & Sons of Agars Hills, Whitfield, Hexham. Their Limousin cross heifer calf, sired by the registered Limousin bull Gunnerfleet Ultre and out of a ¾ bred Limousin cross cow, also attracted great attention and sold for £1,800 going to Messrs Bonsall of Ashbourne, Derbyshire.
