£3,000 TOPS TWO DAY CALF SHOW & SALE

The UK’s leading two day show and sale of continental cross suckled heifer and bullock calves presented a catalogued entry of 2,467 head.

Champion Heifer - l/r David Bamforth (judge), Shaun McWilliams (FABBL), James Little (vendor), Derek Oliver (Royal Bank of Scotland), Colin Little (vendor).
guards heifer

The first days event was the heifer section and a superb consignment of stock was on offer. The pre-sale judging was carried out by Mr David Bamforth of Wainstalls, Halifax, and catching his eye to win the overall heifer championship was a lovely black Limousin cross, shown by local father and son team, Colin and James Little of the Guards, Ireby. Their 12 month old heifer, sired by the registered Limousin bull Calrossie Rodin and out of a Belgian Blue cross Limousin mother, attracted tremendous interest and was sold for £1,600 going to the judge of the day David Bamforth.

The reserve championship rosette went to a black and white Belgian Blue cross heifer shown by Mrs E Gill of Lowthwaite Farm, Udale. Selling for £700 she was also purchased by judge David Bamforth.

Leading the heifer sale at £2,000 was a Limousin cross consigned by Andrew Waugh of Kilnstown, Roweltown. This stylish heifer, a daughter of the registered Limousin bull Burndale Stewart, which had earlier won a second price ticket behind the champion, was finally knocked down to Messrs Alford of Staple Grove, Taunton.

Champion Steer - l/r David Anderson (judge), Shaun McWilliams (FABBL), Jason and Sarah Wareham (vendors).

The second days judging for the steers was carried out by local enthusiast Mr David Anderson of Crosby, Maryport, who presented the overall bullock championship to a Blonde cross shown by Jason and Sarah Wareham of Heathfield, East Sussex. Their entry, a black and white steer, sired by a registered Blonde bull and out of a Belgian Blue cross dam, was sold for £1,400 going to the days judge David Anderson.

The reserve champion steer came from the consignment shown by Bren and Brian Atkinson of Scratchmere Scar, Plumpton. Their red Limousin cross was by a registered Limousin Eden bred bull and out of a Belgin Blue cross Limousin mother. It was sold for £1,150 also going to the judge David Anderson.

The leading price from the bullock sale was £3000 for a Limousin cross shown by brothers Robert & Michael Scott of Thirlwall Castle, Greenhead, Carlisle. This greatly admired steer is a son of the registered Limousin bull Cloughhead Titan and is bred out of a Limousin cross mother. He was knocked down to Mr R MacPherson of Mill Farm House, Oban.

Auctioneers on the day commented ‘the trade for the heifers was marvellous throughout as all vendors left the ringside delighted with the prices received. Bullocks also met with a very strong enquiry with the trade, but not quite reaching the terrific levels of the first day’.
