143 PEDIGREE LIMOUSIN CATTLE
Friday 6th October 2006

SOLID TRADE UNDERPINS ONGOING
DEMAND FOR LIMOUSIN FEMALES

The sale from the respective Chatsworth, Millington, Barrons, Haber and Angiean Limousin Herds held at Borderway Mart on Friday 6th October 2006, saw a good demand for Limousin females of all classes. In all 121 animals were sold including 72 cows and 49 heifers, maiden, served and in-calf, to realise a total sale gross of over £150,000. With buyers, new and established, from the length and breadth of the country at ringside, bidding was very solid and this led to a near total clearance of the lots on offer.

The day’s leading price at 2,400gns was paid for Chatsworth Uckleberry, on behalf of the Chatsworth Settlement, Stud Farm, Pilsley, Bakewell, Derbyshire. This February 2003 born first calver is sired by Grange Ovipare and is out of the home-bred dam, Chatsworth Raspberry a daughter of Hartside Nelson. Sold with her Harrison Sanyo bull calf at foot and PD’d in calf to Procters Trooper, Chatsworth Uckleberry was purchased by Cumbrian breeder JW & DN Eve, Stubbsgill Farm, Westnewton, Aspatria, Carlisle for the Eves herd.

Hitting the 2,300gns mark was the January 2004 born served heifer, Chatsworth Venus, a Harrison Sanyo daughter out of another Hartside Nelson sired cow, Chatsworth Sunbeam. Also PD’d in calf, this time to Haltcliffe Valiant, Chatsworth Venus sported a Beef Value of LM43, putting her easily within the top 1% of recorded Limousin animals. This smart young heifer sold to the Moonleaze herd of JJ Comer, New Moon Leaze Farm, Braydon, Swindon, Wiltshire.

Prime Bros, Forrest Farm, Swinscoe, Nr Ashbourne, Derbyshire, who run the Forestside pedigree herd, paid 2,000gns for the 19 month old maiden heifer Chatsworth Avocado. Sired by the Neutron son Procters Trooper, this heifer was out of Chatsworth Raspberry the dam of the day’s top price. Again combining breeding and figures, this heifer had an excellent Beef Value of LM30.

Two further cows with calves at foot made 1,900gns. First of these was Chatsworth Satsuma, a third calver by the sire Grange Ovipare, a Gabarit son, and out of Chatsworth Orangina. This cow, with her Hartside Nelson sired bull calf, Chatsowrth Buttons at foot, sold to the Sandedge pedigree herd of A Lumsdon, Backstone Bank Farm, Wolsingham, Bishop Auckland, Co Durham. She was again PD’d in calf to Hartside Nelson. Also PD’d in calf to Hartside Nelson was the March 2003 born Chatsworth Umber who was accompanied by her Harrison Sanyo sired bull calf, Chatsworth Bond. A daughter of Ronick Ivan and out of Chatsworth Nutmeg, she was also purchased at the 1900gns mark by PR Walker & Son, Manor House Farm, Lund, Driffield, E.Yorkshire.

Millington Grange Estate, Cold Skin Farm, Millington, York had 40 lots on offer in their sale portion. Topping their consignment was the two and a half year old bull Millington Vatican at 1,900gns. Bought by PS Tindale, Wydon Eals Farm, Featherstone, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, this young bull is by the sire Imperial and out of the dam Halea who had herself bred a Paris Show Champion.

The French cow, Sherpa, topped the Millington consignment of cows when selling for 1600gns. This daughter of Pedro and out of Meduse was sold with her heifer calf at foot, the Woodhouse Prince sired Millington Baroness. Offered once again in calf to Millington Velox, this animal was another purchase for JJ Comer, New Moon Leaze Farm, Braydon, Swindon, Wiltshire. Mr A Fotheringham, Craighall Farm, Forgandenny, Perth paid the same price of 1600gns for the January 2003 born Millington Ulverston, another “three lives for the price of one” outfit. Combining Redpaths Optic and Wilodge Opal genetics, she was sold in calf and with her Towthorpe Uganda sired bull calf at foot.

Leading the Barrons consignment on behalf of Mr W Barron, Morrow Edge Farm, Burnhope, Durham were two cows that caught the eye of WH & DA Gass, Nunscleugh House, Roweltown, Carlisle, Cumbria. They successfully bid 1,700gns for Barrons Trixy, a four year old daughter of Waindale Prime and out of Ronick Goodietoo, sold AI’d to Heros and having subsequently run with Sarkley Volvo. They followed this up with an outlay of 1,300gns for her half-sister Barrons Trudy, this time out of the dam Newacres Lady and once more in calf to the same sire pairing.

The production sale for the Haber Herd of Messrs Fisher, Haber Farm, Crosby, Ravensworth, Penrith, Cumbria was topped by the rising four year old cow, Haber Tilly, a Shire Milton daughter and out of Hillhead Ruth. Sold alongside her Woldedge Paul sired bull calf, Haber Bill, and in calf to Haber Victor, she was knocked down for 1,150gns to Mrs R Stevenson, Howgill Foot, Kaber, Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria.

Angiean Venus topped the Angiean Herd contingent on behalf of Messrs IK & AM Grisedale, Greenmount Farm, Milton, Milnthorpe, Cumbria. A June 2004 born heifer by Beck Trident and out of Marnhull Jade, she was sold in calf to Dyke Vanbasten for 1,100gns to Mr A Renton, 3 Tannagh Brae, Duns, Berwickshire.
