REPORT

Carlisle Charolais peak at 4,800gns

Charolais bulls peaked at 4,800gns at the breed society’s early spring show and sale in Carlisle, on Friday 10 March 2006. Sale leader and the event’s reserve champion was Thrunton Vulcan, a 19 month old within the breed’s top 25% with a Beef Value of CH26. Sired by Burradon Talisman and out of a homebred cow going back to Maerdy Nero, he was bred by the Campbell family, Ian, John and their father, Colin, of Thrunton, Alnwick and went to join David and Marjorie Stobart’s Cracrop herd, Brampton.

The Campbells continued their success by achieving the day’s second highest call of 4,400gns with their second class prize winner, Thrunton Vapour CH26 (June 2004), another Talisman son and out of a homebred cow by Maerdy Location. He sold to TL Howie, Patna, Ayr. A third Talisman son, the 16 month old Thrunton Viagra CH28 made 2,100gns to P Coupland, Marwood, Barnard Castle.

Finally, the Campbells offered Thrunton Vernon CH17, a 17 month old by Thrunton Rustler for 2,500gns to Kincardineshire based Easter Tulloch, Laurencekirk who also went to 3,200gns for the day’s champion, Midlock Vineyard, an August 2004 born Allanfauld Nutcase son from John Wight, Midlock, Biggar.

Catalogued last, but not least among the bidding at 4,000gns was Edenhurst Vibrant CH25, a November 2004 born Allanfauld Superscot son from Peter Vasey, Wetheral, Carlisle to J and CO Dunn, Ayr.

Leading the Welsh entry was Maerdy Verdun, a July 2004 born Maerdy United son from Flintshire vert, Esmor Evans, Mold changing hands at 2,500gns to Cumbria producers J Duff and Sons, Kirkbride, Wigton.

Averages: 13 bulls £2,600.77; 3 females £892.50.
