Sale of Beef Shorthorn Bulls and Females
Friday 26th May 2006

Beef Shorthorn females were in hot demand at the Annual Spring Show & Sale on behalf of the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society at Carlisle on Friday 26th May 2006.

Topping the sale at 4,000gns was a cow and calf which made up the dispersal sale of the Thorn Herd on behalf of Mr John Kirkbride from Springfield, Dumfriesshire. Glenisla Duchess a July 2001 born daughter of Eionmor Mr Gus and she sold with her heifer calf at foot born in April of this year. She was successfully purchased by RJ Canning Limited of Newbury.

Also from the Thorn Herd was Glenisla Carnation Rouge who also sold with her heifer calf born in April of this year, a daughter of Old Cambus Tommy. This great breeding outfit was knocked down at 3,000gns to JMT Foljambe of Nottinghamshire.

The same purchaser also bought an in calf heifer from the Thorn Herd, Thorn Gay Phyllis who was selling in calf to Thorn Xtrovert she was purchased for 2,600gns.

In the collective section of the sale a heifer and calf consigned by Sarah Turner of Ripon, North Yorkshire. Brampton Wisteria a March 2003 born daughter of Balmyle Zeus and with her heifer calf at foot she was purchased by R Layfield of Ilkley, Yorkshire.

The same purchaser Mr Layfield also bought another two animals reaching up to 3,000gns. The first was for Newfield Willow Tanzy also consigned by Miss Turner. Tanzy a daughter of Uppermill Blether and out of a Honation of Drymen bred daughter. Mr Layfield also purchased at 3,000gns a heifer and calf consigned by Messrs James Biggar of Castle Douglas. Chapelton Skjaklin a Roan February 2004 outfit the first daughter to be sold sired by Tofts Romany.

In the bull section a May 2004 bull consigned by Playfair Farms of Kelso, Roxburghshire, sold for 1,850gns. Tofts Baron Gold son of Byland Gold Spear and out of a Diamond Mr X sired mother he was purchased by local enthusiasts P & J Bailea of Shap, Penrith.

The next bull into the sale ring was sold for 1,500gns and offered by Dumfriesshire breeders Brian Ryder of Moffat. Annanwater Xrate a May 2004 sired son of Colony Wymott Lightening and was purchased by Low Moor Howe Farm Limited of Windermere.
