The demand for fresh milking Holsteins was evident from the Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Sale on Wednesday 15th February 2006. Sixty-one animals sold to average £1100.01 to a top of 2,000gns.

Leading breeder Andrew Wilson from Northshields Holsteins in Fife tapped the champions forward. First place heifer in milk was Nethervalley Rubens Phyliss consigned by Robbie Scott, Shacklehill Farm, Ayr. Judge Wilson commented on her length and style combined with her beautiful udder. This heifer went on to become champion with the reserve position going to Rowell Igniter Lobella owned by W.N. & H.N. Barton. Both champion and reserve now join local breeder Steven Brough, Buckabank, Dalston for 1,600gns an d1,580gns respectively.

Top price was paid for a heifer with an awesome heritage, Petteril Lyster Lucinda owned by S&A Morley Petteril Bank Southwaite Carlisle. She descends from five successive generations of excellent or very good dams from the two time master breeder herd in Canada Raivue Holsteins.Lucinda and now joins the herd of Ayrshire breeder D.G. Morgan & A.D. Hughes for 2000gns.

A&DM & N & S Sanderson, Butholme Farm, Lanercost paid 1500gns for one of the best uddered heifers in the sale, a daughter of Roylane Jordan, she sold just a few weeks fresh giving 33kg daily, this heifer was consigned by W.N. & H.N. Barton, Barwood Holsteins.

A large consignment from both T.C. Yuill & Son West Newtown Farm Lanarkshire and Messrs Akrigg Croft House Silloth Cumbria were in strong demand selling to an average of over £1000.

Alison Millar marketing coordinator remarked …”current trade has to remain strong for the foreseeable future, breeders who have heifers with width and dairy strength for sale will continue to make reasonable returns …our bull sale on 15th March has many opportunities to purchase bulls that will breed these types of heifers.”
