Kirkby Stephen Annual Prize Show and Sale of Swaledale Gimmer Lambs, Cross Swaledale Ewes and Bluefaced Leicester Rams & Females

Friday 29th September 2006

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their Annual Prize Show and Sale of 1,700 Swaledale Ewes, Prize Show & Sale of 2,292 Swaledale Gimmer Lambs, Prize Show & Sale of 175 Bluefaced Leicester Rams & Females and 36 Texel & Suffolk Rams.

Purchasers were selective, swaledale ewes averaged £27.20 (-£9.56), Swaledale Gimmer Lambs averaged £29.30 (-£3.57), Bluefaced Leicester Rams averaged £361.73 (-£35.92), Bluefaced Leicester Females averaged £93.33 (-£46.67) and Other Breed Rams averaged £208.33 (+£22.62)

The show of Swaledale Gimmer Lambs, sponsored by Eden Farm Supplies was judged by M/s. J & P Capstick, Whicham Hall, who made the following awards:-

1st & Eden Farm Trophy - D W Birbeck, Villa Park - £90 to M/s. Reed, The Knarr
2nd            R Marwood & Son, Long Green - £68 to M/s. Capstick
3rd            P Chester, Lowgill - £52 to M/s. Coates

A good line up of Bluefaced Leicester sheep was brought before the judge for the day Mr D Brown, Agglethorpe and cash prizes were generously sponsored by NATWEST and presented by Mr Ray Lowis, Senior Agricultural Manager. The following prizes were given:-

Aged or Shearling Ram
1st            K A Brown & Sons, Asby Hall - £300
2nd            D Alderson, East Lowfield - £300
3rd            R M Guy, Warren Wood - £300
Ram Lambs
1st            W A Dinsdale, Harkerside - £1,200
2nd            M/s. Lord, Low Dowgill - £2,500
3rd            H R Hayton & Son, Asby Grange - £800
Female
1st            W & C W Dent, Greenriggs - £200
2nd            G Lightburn, High Plains – Not sold
3rd            G P Taylor & Sons, Swathburn – Not sold

The championship was awarded to M/s. W & C W Dent, Greenriggs for their homebred gimmer shearling by the Skeughdale sire, while the reserve champion went to the ram lamb from W A Dinsdale, sired by Ravenscar XI out of a Hewgill R1 ewe. Messrs Lord achieved the day’s top price of £2,500 for their ram lamb with sires and grand sires both homebred, it joins the flock of S Allan & Sons, Greenhow. H R Hayton & Son, Asby Grange weighed in at £1,800 for their Lunesdale sired shearling ram purchased by R W Clarkson, Low Whita.
